That's a pretty good argument against players choosing their coaches.

No, that's a good argument against using stupid social media apps as a measure of anything.

Peter Maher discussing the Rick Bell article and Sutter.

Another poor take.

Basically players are making millions so they should suck it up and play better lol.

They would really just let Peter stay retired.

Don't really see what's wrong with what he said. If you have a personal issue with the coach or anyone else on the team, it shouldn't effect your effort level. It did and that's a big problem now as it was then.

Pure speculation, but it would seem Kadri would be on that list no? We heard about rumblings, and then we saw him essentially quitting.

The snowflake stuff is over the top and silly, but there isn't a clean sweep of problems with Sutter gone.
Hard to say players quit and as you said the effort wasn't the issue but the only glaring player with a effort issue was Kadri that I could see.

I just don't see a lot of quitters on this team. Players probably playing upset or not with the right mental preparation because they are upset with how things are going.

That would be a much more difficult issue to clean up. Maybe a coaching change reignites him?

It wasn't the points that was missing it was being a team player and playing with fire with him.

He's absolutely right and they should suck it up and play better. There's no issue with players being frustrated or done with a coach, but the way it is being presented really reeks of players mailing it in this year. As fans who pay very good money for this product, it really irks me.

I think we know exactly why Florida didn't have any interest in keeping Huberdeau, and why consistently getting the best out of players like Kadri season by season is often a problem. I can certainly say I have little faith either of these players are all in with this franchise moving forward regardless of the coach and what is scary is we don't really know how many others can be lumped in with this group.

For me both Kadri and Huberdeau better have top notch seasons next year after this or it is time to get very concerned about these deals and the negative effect the players may be having on the room.

Man, more and more we're really seeing a major generational divide in how you approach work playing out across various industries.

Funny as we get older we see a change in younger people compared to ourselves at their age.

100%. Try this in a lot of different sports and you might even find yourself on the outside looking in when it comes to locker room fit and career longevity.

I used to despise the NFL contract system, but man it would be something for some of these players to have a little more uncertainty and more than pride to play for.

Yep, old managers want all their staff sitting in their desks in the office and old hockey people want a hard coach to chew out their teams like drill sergeants.

I’m with you though, hopeful he gets back to something like a point a game. To be clear, he has produced better than RNH over his career, I just think calling him a 115 point player is a little misleading.
No doubt. I think consistent 100+ point guys are counted on one hand in the NHL. Despite two seasons in a row I’m not even sure Tkachuk is on that list. Certainly Gaudreau isn’t. I’m just expecting a return to career form.

I hate the 'suck it up' attitude so much. It's that kind of thinking that sets back folks, especially men, taking Mental Health seriously.

But I'm just a 37 year old millenial snowflake woke moralist or whatever.

Hockey makes me laugh though.

These old hockey people would let players drink, and smoke like crazy, they would show up to camp out of shape, and had very little in the way of an off ice regime.

The current generation of NHLers have their own chefs, meal plans, nutritionists, skating coaches, take a combined total of 2 weeks off from skating in the summer...etc

And then you wonder why a younger player maybe doesn't relate to a coach just yelling "work harder". These guys dedicate their life to the game, you can't really question commitment for any NHLer nowadays.

Do we really think any Flame mailed it in this year? I don’t. Not even Kadri. And really not Huberdeau - I think he tried hard to do as he was coached.

Veteran players have veteran opinions, and they are valid. This isn’t new. Crosby got rid of a coach, McDavid has gotten rid of coaches.

Personally, I'm really interested to see what happens when the Millenial/GenZ group gets to the point where they own and manage businesses and the young employees start dictating to them how they should run their operations when THEIR money is on the line.

Life looks a LOT different when the shoe is on the other foot, folks.

(And yes, I agree, a grouchy boss is not a great model. OTOH, when one signs a contract and takes a position that pays real money, the expectation is that you - as an individual - will fulfill your part of the contract.

"OK Boomer" me if you want. I'll wait until it's your turn. I've had money on the line in businesses for decades.)

Mentioned this earlier, but the fact of the matter is the NHL workforce is comprised of players from a generation with a very different perspective to that of most of the men coaching and managing these resources. The players are the ones who produce results so it is crucial for management to adjust to the new workforce norm. This is playing out in industries across the continent and many are struggling with the cultural change. Those that evolve and adapt to the new workforce will find greater success. Those who fight this and try to maintain a standard that does not align with the workforce will struggle and probably fail. I hope the Flames acknowledge this shift and brings in a GM and coaching staff that understand the change in approach.

It is easy to say that it shouldn't, but the simple fact of the matter is that it does. I mean, that's literally why the word toxic is used in these situations: the situation is poisoning the environment, and expecting everyone to continue, unabated, in the poisoned atmosphere is wishful thinking.

there are degrees to situations like this. If you're not getting the ice-time you think you deserve, or the line-mates and opportunities that you think you deserve, the answer is to suck it up and keep working hard - and things will take care of themselves eventually.

But as the situation deteriorates, at some point it becomes toxic, whereby the situation itself is having a negative impact on the participants, to the point where simply saying 'suck it up' doesn't (correctly) apply.

If there is a poisonous element contaminating the environment, you have to remove that element before you can repair the environment.
