Good move. On the players' side of things, this isn't 1998, all of these guys are elite talent who have sacrificed a lot to get to the NHL. They know their worth. When a coach repeatedly disrespects their worth and still can't figure out how to make them into a team, well, that coach has got to go.

I thought I heard that somewhere. Before the rehired Conroy and Maloney I heard Sutter was the only one still under contract. TBF assistant coaches, and others weren't actually mentioned. Still, I'd be surprised if they were.

I still have mixed emotions about this and still value an old school coach in Sutter but would love to pair it with a more modern perspective. Experience matters, experience running a bench, a practice, dealing with ref's, players and tactical matters matter.

I just wish we could have a little bit of both and that upper management/ ownership would have taken a bigger hand in having Sutter ease off when required. Bring a more gentle approach once in a while and making sure that everybody is treated strongly yet respectfully. There is nothing wrong with high level management imposing a directive onto a coach/GM for the above mentioned matters.

My concern is that the ownership group will try and reduce the costs of his contract and spread it around the organization.

Players are still players and they may be a little different now, so should the coaches. Older people can adjust, improve and incorporate new techniques. On a recent Fan 960 interview, a prominent NHL agent let it be known that one of the most advanced GM in the league is NYI GM/President Lou Lamoriello at nearly 81 years old.

It's just frustrating that we had to go down the same path and have the same negative outcomes as a result. Everybody and their "Some coaches have a shelf life" mentality don't appreciate you can still be a long term bench boss, stern, tough and accountable while winning. You need to mitigate the downside risks while getting the positive aspects.

Francis wasn't wrong on much, but him saying that Tkachuk wasn't viewed as a playoff performer seems way off. It was pretty clear to most observers (I think) that his competitiveness and down-low game should translate to the playoffs.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

IMO the majority of the fanbase would welcome a rebuild and it seems like now is a logical time to do that since we no longer have Gio, Tkachuk, Gaudreau, Treliving, and Sutter. Plus a huge crop of upcoming UFA's who make up the majority of the current core. Plus (hopefully) a new building coming in a few years.

However, Maloney's comments in the media about how we have a good core and a lot of good pieces makes me think they will hire a GM that agrees with their vision of trying to make the playoffs no matter the cost. All of the comments about a "clean slate" and "fresh start" seem like lip service to me. Bean made it abundantly clear what the view from ownership is IMO with "I'm not allowed to say the word rebuild".

We need to crush this 2023 draft, this is the best chance for us to build on the fly. We need to move some players for more picks and hope that we hit a few home runs, that's the only way I see us clawing our way back to relevance because a full-on rebuild seems extremely unlikely and I don't think this current core gets us where we want to be.. we need game-breakers.

I'm looking forward to the hiring of a "new age", "analytical", "gets it", "players coach", named Greg Geoff or Glenn and the inevitable success that will surely follow.

Bonus points if they like hiking, drinking on trains, and have a last name that also starts with a G

Maybe they'll appoint a captain with the leadership to turn up the volume on those tunes.

disagree. especially if you've read CP over the last few years. It's been a common refrain.
Even your posts says "should", not that he was a playoffs performer.

Even up to a few weeks ago, some here were giving him no credit for his last 2 seasons as "he hasn't done anything in the playoffs"

I've never had much of an opinion one way or the other about Eric Francis as I'm not in the Calgary media environment and don't pay attention to him much, but between his tweet yesterday and this video I find him terribly unlikable. He's so joyful reveling in someone getting fired and in airing the dirty laundry.

The blue liners took too many shots without traffic and it killed a lot of offence. I also think Huberdeau had a hard time adjusting to defence first, then still being creative and affective offensively.
You are over thinking it. Last year they had Gaudreau feeding cross seam and slot passes and they had Tkachuk in tight.

No mystery.

Also, since this is the Sutter got fired thread, it bears mentioning that he was constantly beating the drum last season about how the Flames didn't have any gamebreakers when in fact they had 2 very good ones. I wonder how Johnny and Matty liked hearing their coach say that every time he took the podium...

No mystery.
And people just forget that when Gaudreau had to pass to a weakening Monahan the year before, it just was not working (and Gaudreau had become a fair bit stale in his playmaking). In fact, a lot of Gaudreau passes into the slot from 2020-22 had the same result as Huberdeaus this last season. A lot of traffic in the recipeint's area and a less than quality shot on net.
