What if we called it a dude ranch and they got some fresh air, 3 squares and a cot while sweeping out stalls and feeding the livestock. Something like that. Win win. It worked for that Yellowstone guy.

And Cowperson could be our John Dutton who is firm, but fair. Tough love. Knows you have to crack a couple eggs to make an omelet.

In principle, I see a lot of potential benefit in a form of institutionalization that gets people back on their feet. I have a lot of doubts about how it would actually be implemented. If not implemented well, it could be a horrific disaster and a step backwards.

Didn't the John Wick concierge try this on The Wire? If I recall, the draw of Hamsterdam was that the cops would leave them mostly alone in exchange for them keeping their business within Hamsterdam.

Not you per se. More the idea that some rando cop would be the authority. Just because he's a cop doesn't mean he knows what's going on with CT. For all we know he works in the burbs, never uses transit or goes DT.
Then again, many of my coworkers use transit and, while they all complain about the constant issues at stations with drug use, none of them have said it is unsafe.
Obviously there have been a number of concerning developments in teh last few years from crime to drug use but those kinds of over the top proclamations from the cop don't do anyone any good or provide any useful info or context.

She's just 16 and it scared the #### out of her. He was one of those clowns that stands in the middle of intersections begging for change. This was around Anderson/Elbow at like 7:30pm. So a big 'fata you' to all the dopes who give these people money and encourage this behaviour.
Last night I was in South Centre Mall at one of the glasses stores. This lunatic of a drug addict dressed head to toe in a Toronto Blue Jays get-up barges in and accuses me of putting her daughter and mother in a coma just because she is - and I quote - a "crack whore." Hollow cheeks, sores all over her face, rail thin, blathering on about how Calgary is going to get an MLB team. I laughed at her and she came at me like a superfast zombie screaming. Like, wtf.
The girl working in the store looked scared out of her mind. I had the neighbouring store call security and I just had to hang around to make sure this sick fata didn't do anything to the girl; however, I felt pretty helpless. Like, the "crack whore" wouldn't have been a problem for me to handle physically, I wouldn't think, but like I want to get myself into some physical entanglement with her that could potentially cause problems for me.
IDK what the point of this is, but holy #### do we ever have a problem on our hands with these strung out people that I don't see how we're going to fix. It was one thing when they just sort of stuck to the inner city, which worked for me, but now they're spreading into the good end of town and it's very annoying and off-putting.

Is that so? Can you please link me to the specifics of that? I support the NDP with a monthly donation and this is something I'll want to talk to them about depending on exactly what you mean here.

where exactly are these "better accommodations?" My understanding is that everything currently in use has a waiting list?
in a similar thought... if we ask cops to start laying charges to clear the transit stations, were is the remand space available in alberta while they await a trial/ hearing?

That was Janice's dad from Barry. But where would we even sacrifice in Calgary for Hamsterdam. Carve out somewhere in Highfield or Manchester?

Bring in a big ol' rusty ship and plop it down in Lake Bonavista. If they can't swim, they can't leave!

The hardest of the hard drugs.
Also, keep in mind to whom you've replied; I would not hold my breath on receiving anything in reply that isn't complete nonsense.

This has definitely worked in the US and has had no massive ramifications or social echos at all

We used to go in pretty hard on vagrants. I even have personal experience:
I just came back from Nam and I was hitchin' through Oregon and some cop started harassing me. Next thing I know I had a whole army of cops chasing me through the woods. I had to take them all out. it was a bloodbath.

I think incarceration is a must here and they have to earn their way out through sobriety and rehabilitation. And for some, they'll probably never leave and will end up transferred to a mental institution. Is that cruel? I don't think so. It's better than letting them flounder in Rapesville Stabcity Tentown by the river.

Yeah I think we need to stay away from the "concentration camp" lingo, but I am aligned with the view point. IMO putting up a fence around it is a step too far, but my solution of making it geographically difficult to reach is the same without a physical fence.
I agree with the comment a few pages back- the real problem with this scenario becomes staffing. Not only acquiring enough staff, but instituting proper and rigorous oversight to avoid massive taking advantage that's inevitable.
But I think they don't have to be nice places to end up... you kind of want there to be some level of threat to not going there.

If you throw it in a mountain valley or in the middle of the tundra, though, you probably want fences so people don't 'escape' and then end up dying of exposure. I think you need to lock them in for a bit for their own safety as well as the safety of others.
