Tell me you haven’t been to City Hall without telling me.

What does clearing tent cities even do, spread homeless people around? At least when they are congregated the already spread to thin social workers have condensed areas to target.

-Gets rid of a lot of illegal weapons
-Takes away very dangerous environments where a lot of people have been raped/beaten/killed
-Gives back public space to the public
-Helps surrounding businesses get clientele back who won't go to that area because of the tent city
-Forces inhabitants into better accommodations with social services in place and better safety for them such as fire safety & weapon controls.
-Frees up millions of dollars in tax funds that can be better used to help these issues
-Frees up emergency services from having to constantly be at these tent cities

I agree with the unbolded, but the bolded assumes that moving homeless people to less congregated areas makes them disappear. There are no better accommodations, it is a tent in a tent city or a tent anywhere else. these people will still be infront of businesses, taking up emergency services and tax funds.
I get that tent cities are dangerous places where criminal activities happen, but forcing people to disperse does nothing to solve the problem of homelessness. It is like giving a car a paint job after it has broken down. It is a cosmetic solution.

Is there such thing as a not-so-bad concentration camp? I know they get a bad rap (and deservedly so), but is there a way to build a barbed-wire fence around a large area with some longhouses, basic sanitation and meals? I'm not even joking. Is there not a point at which we say, 'yeah, you're not allowed to live in a tent at the neighbourhood park and smoke meth all day...sorry, we thought you knew that, but if we catch you again it's off to the camp'.

I think the line where it changes from a social service like the Drop-In Centre to a veritable prison/concentration camp is when you restrict their freedom of movement.

Yeah, but that's what needs to happen.
I think you say 'concentration camp' and people envision emaciated people and gas chambers, but I'm not talking about that.
I think incarceration is a must here and they have to earn their way out through sobriety and rehabilitation. And for some, they'll probably never leave and will end up transferred to a mental institution. Is that cruel? I don't think so. It's better than letting them flounder in Rapesville Stabcity Tentown by the river.

Bahaha, good lord. This is some top tier posting here. I'm for a forceful crackdown to make things safer and such, but I think a concentration camp is more than a little across the line!

In a free society I don't think this is viable without prosecution, unless you want to start giving beat cops Judge Dredd-type authority to "sentence" those accused of vagrancy to Houseless Rehabilitation Encampments based on their own witness.
Might just be me, but I think this might be abused pretty badly by the authorities!

Question - outside of your 2 experiences with a squeegee boy and woman acting strangely, how big of a problem do you actually think this is that you think internment or concentration camps are in order? Is your entire view of this basically from this thread you created and social media conservative rants or something? I honestly think this is being hyped and amplified way beyond reason.

In fact you need a full scale criminal prosecution for each and every person you're sending to this "camp"... from a constitutional perspective it's just prison.

I agree with you, a better alternative needs to exist first.
Moving people from a tent location to another street location is pointless.
I was just answering your general question as to moving away from tent cities is beneficial.
I fully agree the plan must also involve the "where are the going to go" part.

You still seem confused. There was no squeegee kid as those guys clean your window and don't jump on your hood.
Pretty sure I'm not being amped up by conservatives, but have I worked myself up about this? Honestly, I don't think so. I'd say I'm unemotionally objective about the problem and I believe that's evident in my posts.

What are you going to charge them with? EDIT: I guess my point is that there are criminal code provisions already for things like causing a disturbance but you don't go to prison for them so I'm not sure how you're going to get anyone sent to this camp for being in a tent city.
