[Trade] Ekholm (4% retained) + 6th to Oilers for Barrie, Schafer, 2023 1st, and 2024 4th

I think this is a terrible trade. I thought Barrie played a super important role for the Oilers. Ekholm is older and has a lot of mileage on him. Barrie is 12th in the NHL in D points and is the only D who contributes on the PP, which is the Oilers’ differentiating factor.

They also mortgaged their future for the “upgrade”. If Ekholm was the Ekholm of 4-5 years ago, this would worry me.

And Edmonton is worse. Neither Smith nor Keith are there and they were big contributors.

I think Ekholm is a top pairing d-man. After him the Oilers don't have a single top 4 d-man. Nurse is like a #5/6 d-man making stupid money, If the Oilers are smart they would go after EK65 in the offseason. Now Evan Bouchard is on the top PP unit, watch him rack up pts and demand a crazy contract, the guy has no idea how to play defence, just like his pal Nurse.

Oilers just did a couple moves that moved 2 guys out for 1. They already play top players too much to make it through 4 rounds. They just don’t have the depth to win

As much as I like to dump on the Oilers, Nurse is a #3/4D. I don't think they would have the cap space to chase Karlsson... They will have $8.5M in cap space to fill in 7-9 roster spots.

He's got 4G and 24A operating on the PP.

While not comparable directly, since the Edmonton's top unit is much more potent, this is something to observe going forward.

I'm guessing they expect Bouchard to fill the gap left by Barrie's departure and not Ekholm.

Pretty decent haul for the preds.

Flames could have done well if they put hanafin on the market. Could have picked up more now than on the offseason in my opinion, if they don’t intend on extending him.

Imo if it was Bouchard like someone rumored, they'd have gotten much better right now

Here's to hoping the auto PP is even 5% worse than it was, which is the oilers only weapon/hope for winning games

And yeah-Ekholms peak was between 2-5 years ago

I think he fills a need for the Oilers and they are slightly better today because of the trade. I don't know if he moves the needle that much though. I guess we'll have to see if he can adjust to the Oilers anti-defense system.
