If we let the 80 plus vote that seems like a good idea. They are likely more knowledgeable about an assortment of issues and the roles and responsibilities of government than their parents.

It would have such a good effect on future civic responsibility/participation if high school students voted en masse as part of the curriculum. So many people I know - probably a majority - didn't vote at all between 18-40, and then picked it up sometime after that.

As an Alberta social studies teacher, I'd say that lots of kids are very well informed and take a passion in what's happening in the society around them. Many (but not all) share the same ideas and values as their parents, which is fine.
I'd support lowering the voting age, and think it would really help if kids could actually vote when they are learning about some of these issues in school.

Isn't the min age to get a UCP membership (and thus vote for leader) 14 years?
Voting in the provincial election at 16 only makes sense then.

yes, but do the majority of them have enough experience and knowledge to make an informed decision? Are they able to set priorities? Can they be over influenced by teachers or social media? It seems that the extreme environmentalists have set their sights on the younger vote with their scare tactics.
I worry about the "dumbing down" of the voting base. It's already at an all time low in my estimation.

I’m not super invested in a voting age debate, but doesn’t it have to do with being a taxpayer? People under 18 aren’t paying income tax…although maybe the NDP has a plan to square that circle as well!

After discussing social studies with the teenager and her friends, I'm not convinced that the 16-17 year old voting block is much different than any other voting block.
They all seemed to care about whatever their parents teach them to care about. Jobs, taxes, climate, whatever.
The one difference I noticed is that they care way more about education and LGBTQ issues than the adults do.

If you're 14, and you can buy a political membership at 14 (didn't even know you could do that with the UCP), are you not then able to vote on the leader of your party, thereby influencing the political climate of Alberta below the official voting age?
If I'm wrong on this I apologize. Just looking for some clarification here. Are 14 year olds allowed to vote as UCP members?
