yeah I'd take 8x6.5m in a heartbeat.

Eh. It was pretty speculative. It was just on his "32 Thoughts" podcast reacting to the news of Weegar saying they're working on an extension - all he said was he thinks that he feels it might be around where Hampus Lindholm signed in Boston after the trade in Anaheim (8x$6.5M). So no real news, just him speculating where he thinks it would get done (if it were to get done).

Yup 8x6.5 will look great when the cap goes up in a few years!

seems just about right to me - didn't want to see a 7 handle. $6.5, for 8 years, would be great for a 28 YO defenseman

Always knew his next deal would still be much less than deserved, but 8×6.5 would be insane value for the Flames.

Would immediately become one of the best contracts in the league among D-men

I’m looking too at the additional year at bargain cap hit as an overall AAV for Huby and hopefully Weegar here if they can get it done. 8x6.5 would feel like a steal especially early on and would make the Tkachuk trade look like an absolute steal. Especially considering that the pick procured from that trade helped them move Monahan which opened up the space to lock in Kadri. What a friggen blockbuster by Tre if he ends up locking in Weegar.

Ekblad is certainly the more talented of the two, and his upside is greater. However, he's lost a ton of games to injury over the past 2 years, and he hasn't exactly outplayed Weegar in the playoffs in his career.

If I'm a Panthers fan I'm wondering how much effect Ekblad's 2 major injuries will have on the rest of his career.

When Friedman starts throwing around numbers, I have to think it's close to getting done.

Friedman goes from saying they’re taking a serious run to follow up with a comparable I think it is getting close. Obviously what Weegar said yesterday also leads to believe he is signed before the season starts

Totally. Friedman has good sources. And he wouldn't say 8 * 6.5 unless he has it from a good source that's around where the sides are.

8 x $6.5 is a steal IMO. He’s young enough to not be overly worried about this at any point

8x6.5M is fair

A bit long but salary is probably lower than expected

He will be 29 turning 30 in first year of the deal. The last 2-3 years could be a bit of a worry which is no different from any of the long term deals Treliving has made this summer. These are the best options for today and that is what we are living in with this team at the moment

Let’s not debate Weegar vs Ekblad

I honestly think that we have seen so little of them together that we don't really know anything about them beyond their reputations.

But I mentioned this earlier in this or another thread; after the trade I heard a couple of non-local analysts (NOT "delusional Flames fans") say that Weegar is actually the one who drove the play on that pairing, and Ekblad could struggle this year without him. In fact, I remember a time when it was an absolute given that Shea Webber was the best defenseman in Nashville. Then he go traded. Then Roman Josi emerged out of his shadow as the best blueliner on earth.

Not that Weegar is Josi, but I think this is the point: it is entirely possible that there is a conversation to be had here. But you do you, and stick your head in the sand as usual.
