Trading Hanifin would be addition by subtraction IMO.

People are underating Hanafin.
Young. Big body. Smooth skating. Still cap controlled. Every year improving his game.

I don't think he's being underrated when talking about trading him for Barzal. That trade would make sense for both teams if the Islanders are truly chasing Kadri. It also shows the strength in Calgary's defensive group. Hanafin is a big body but he should use it more. Maybe he will as he gets a bit older but right now Barzal for Hanafin looks good.

Barzal is a good player, I really like his play making and transition game. He can pull defenses apart with his skating and stick handling. He would be a great replacement for Gaudreau as a puck carrier (PP and EV)
I’d like to add him to the current group, but I’m not doing it at the expense of Hanifin.
Hanifin took a massive step last year. He played basically no powerplay time and was only out scored by a whopping 11 points by Barzal. A guy who’s entire game is based around putting up points.
Feels like lots of fans are reeling from the Tkachuk and Gaudreau saga and want to trade an American player for a Canadian one.

I’m not trading Coronato for anything.
For once the flames have a legit shooting RHS RW which we haven’t seen since Iggy.

Pretty tough to argue he's a second line centre and not a first line centre.

He gets first line C time and broke 80 points once. He is a 2nd line C.

He's led the Islanders in scoring in all of his NHL seasons, including out-pointing Tavares. His ES production is top 30 amongst centermen every season for the past five seasons. He was the #1C on a team that made back-to-back conference finals.
If Barzal is a #2C, then there are only a handful of unicorns in the league that are qualified to be a #1C

I love CP logic.
Barzal is only a second line centre.
Then, Flames fans also think Backlund is a second line centre.

There are a lot more posters on CP who insist that Backlund is a third-line centre, and when asked what other third-line centres he is comparable to, come up blank.

Also, Barry Trotz, one hell of a coach, but his coaching generally lower point productions.
Hate to give up on Hanafin, especially when he is still so young and already this good, however, if Barzal is the return, that's a no brainer, takes value to get value.
Weegar is more than capable of replacing Hanafin on the first pairing.

Barzal is definitely a 1st line center. He’s been playing in a very defensive oriented system most of his career which has effected his point totals. I’m just still in the camp that Barzal becoming a Flame is not gonna happen

A lot of players are used very judiciously in their rookie year, and more responsibility is foisted on them in subsequent years, especially young centers. I think Barzal was put in a very beneficial situation in his first year, in regards to his numbers, but since has seen a dip with the added responsibility of playing C in the NHL. I'm not saying he's definitely NOT a #1 C, but he has a lot more to prove before he can be called one.

I’d put it that Barzal is a 1C but not a very effective one, because he tends to be one dimensional and doesn’t put up the points to overcome the defensive play.
The whole 2C/3C and their roles is a bit wonky. Ideally IMO you have a 1C who is strong at both ends - Barkov, Bergeron, Lindy, Kopitar, and then you might have the middle six lines with an offensive C and a defensive one who can spell off the 1C on tough assignments. I hate calling the defensive C a 3C because they tend to have to log pretty big minutes in a hard matchup against the opposing top line.

What?
He was essentially on the 2nd unit powerplay all season with Kylington or Stone and spent a while on the top unit when Andersson was put on PP2.

The post I was responding to said
"addition by subtraction" meaning he has a negative value which is laughable
Barzal would be tempting, I certainly wouldn't be adding though

Hanifin also outscored Anderson in PP points per 60.
Second option but the top producer....unless you throw Mike Stones bizarre numbers in.
