It's a business, and a player needs to look after themselves first. You can't trust a pro sports team to have any sort of loyalty or do the right thing with a discount on a contract.

If a player does give a discount, there is no guarantee that savings would improve the club. They might just as easily waste it on a Neal.

No, there's no requirement to take a discount, especially when he was open to extension talks last summer and things did not progress.

The biggest disservice would be holding the team hostage until the last minute to do whatever he's planning on doing, which seems quite unlikely.....Maybe Treliving is just being obtuse and has already been told as much, but I find it hard to believe the team wouldn't have gone all in ahead of this point if they were prepared to do so anyway.

NYI - that offer isn't serious at $9M x 7

NJ - I think they could go as high as $11M but I don't see them going above $11M

Flyers - I think they would maybe go to $9.5 / $10M but not sure they could afford more than that.

Really NJ is the only team that can offer money and location.

Flyers he might be willing to take less if that is truly where his heart is...but $10-$16M is a lot of money to leave on the table.
