Yes, I meant the draft as a whole also. Very quiet.

Listen, I'm attached to this team too, and I would love it if we could just try again with almost the same roster (plus some internal improvement). The reality is that may not be feasible. Tkachuk may try to either bend the team over a barrel or just straight up refuse to sign long-term.
All I'm saying is that there are other options for the Flames, and that it's much easier to replace, or even potentially improve upon, what Tkachuk brings.
|
You’re just moving the goal posts now. You said Tkachuk would be somewhat easy to replace by dipping into the free agent pool. You even cited Forsberg as an example where they would come out ahead which is just silly.
You’re worried about Tkachuk demanding a ton of money, but aren’t concerned about what it would cost to lure a top free agent to Calgary? You could offer Forsberg 10 per year and he probably still isn’t signing here.
Last season Tkachuk was a top 10 player in the world. When you have a player like that you do everything you can to sign them long term.
I understand Tkachuk may want to leave and if that happens then you need to do what you need to do, but let’s not pretend like that’s a positive outcome for the Flames or that his contributions will be easy to replace.

It didn't take a rocket surgeon to see this possible outcome, but for some reason the guy in charge just couldn't figure it out. He had all the leverage, and now he has none. Really poorly played on Treliving's part.

Technically you’re right and the logic / brain side should have led him to a different decision leading into at the least the trade deadline. But the heart side said take a shot and he took it which took some guts to a degree. I can respect that and I like a GM that is willing to take some chances, it makes it way more interesting.
Like I said back in January, and I was right, they should have told Gaudreau he had to sign up until a week or so before the deadline and if he wouldn’t they should have traded him then. Make an internal deadline don’t give the player 100% of the leverage / power in the negotiations. I got ridiculed on this site for saying that then, but it is looking like it would have been the better long term play but worse short term play. At least he got us to round 2 so it wasn’t all for nothing.

I am coming from the other direction, so we never cross on the Kootney Lake ferry.

No discussing the Kootney Lake ferry in the Jonny Goodreaux thread.

No Johnny here I doubt Chucky gets close to the production he had so he should be either doing a deal with Calgary or working with them to find a real willing to pay him on that 8 year deal. Jersey seems like a good match.

Lesson learned is sign him now or trade his ass before he becomes zero

We can’t have it both ways.

He does have a ton of value. He is an elite pest coming off a top 10 finish in points. I just think he would want to maximize his value after coming off a career year either here or somewhere else.
I believe he would have interest in playing with Jack Hughes for the next 8 years

Something tells me we are about to enter an avalanche of uniformed opinions (some of which will be stated as fact) bereft of any logic, reason, or critical thinking that may be unprecedented on this forum.

Potentially unprecedented times where the team could go from winning the division and winning a round to having trouble retaining their 2 top players one under 30 the other under 25

Well, any sewer bottle depot counter could see this so why do you assume Treliving didn’t? Should seem obvious with anyone who has two brain cells to rub together that the Flames find themselves in a position that was easily seen by not only Treliving but by the entire hockey ops department and ownership.

Half the people, or probably more, have been clamouring for a rebuild for years anyway. You think they would be happy, but no. Just another thing to complain endlessly about.
