In that situation, the other team can also sign undrafted goalie Hicks for free

I like Trochek but I wouldn't give him 6 million.
Maybe 5, especially considering what salary cap acrobatics that Brad would have to pull off to do that.

Closer we get to July 1 with no concrete news the more worried I get...
I have a bad feeling if he exercises his right as an UFA to test the market we're likely in more trouble then we think.
Hope I'm wrong, but just bad memories over end of contracts with past flames star players is really unsettling.

Him, Burakovsky and Domi are coming here as UFAs...book it
How do I know?
All I need to do is look at the first round of the 2013 Draft
So far Tre has collected 8/30

Well to be fair, it's worse than "more trouble than we think" if Gaudreau tests free agency. He gets 8 years from the Flames before free agency, so if Johnny makes it to UFA he's as good as gone.
There's like a 1% chance he has an 8 year offer from us on the table, goes to see what 7 year offers are available around the league and then comes back and takes a 7 year deal from the Flames.

For me it’s the nhl draft. I feel we have to have him signed by that date to figure out what trades and what not we need to be looking at during draft.

If I were in Treliving's shoes I would want deals from both Gaudreau and Tkachuk before the draft. Gaudreau is the first domino to fall, so you would want something from him almost within a few days after the cup is handed out.
I think we are in a two week window with Gaudreau. That's just me though. Treliving might have a steadier nerve and take this right up to the UFA deadline and deal with what comes afterwards.

If he isn’t signed in 11 days, he is gone. A rebuild would be necessary at that point if the goal is to win the Cup.

flames last game was on may 26 - which is 25 days ago
Draft day is July 7 - 17 days from now
Free agent frenzy is July 13 - 23 days from now - so it would seem that we are about halfway between the flames end of season and FA Frenzy
I get that that maybe there is a 5 days or so after the final loss where maybe johnny just wants to get away from work; however, since this is job 1 for Tre 20 or so days of silence is not looking promising - but what do i know

Ah my mistake, I thought free agency started July 1st. Anyway, agree with jayswin, basically.

Exactly, why risk trying a rebuild when we know we're nice in safe in the "not good enough or bad enough" zone.
If Johnny doesn't sign with the Flames and they still try to go for it, it'll be sad. We should probably just start looking at who's available to draft in the 12-15 range...unless we trade away that pick too!

Why would you expect anything but silence though? That's been the M.O. for Flames management since Day 1 with Tre. Notoriously close to the vest and out of the media, thankfully

Yeah I have no idea what's going to happen but the fact its quiet doesn't really matter
deadlines are the pressure point...not 2 weeks before or whatever.

Oh, I am sure his agent is gauging the market with some light tampering. They are asking teams in theory, what would they be willing to offer a 28-year-old winger coming off a 115-point season. Johnny is not going in 100% blind.

no but speculation and actual offers are two different things
ever try to sell something expensive? you will have a lot of people who say they will buy but when it comes time to actually pony up the dough things can fall apart.
Clearing the cap for a 10M player is not easy

May have been discussed already but i wonder how Torts to Philadelphia affects Johnny's decision? I know Darryl ain't easy but a lot of past players didn't seem so keen on playing for Torts.

I would guess that it has no effect one way or the other. Gaudreau will go to the highest bidder, so long as he believes the team has a chance to win.
