Also generally fans and media of other teams agree it was a bad call
Reading that explanation makes me more angry about it
Just a terrible call and even worse explanation

I love how they tried to say they were relying on consistency. I think this rule gets changed in the off season. No goals off skates

Well... never attribute to malice what can just as easily be explained by incompetence...
I guess...

I doubt that there was a directive from up above. But there's probably meetings all the time where people say, "man, it sure would be nice for the league to have McDavid in the spotlight". It gets into the back of their heads. So when they see a sliver of possibility that the goal should be overturned, their brains jump on that and block out competing evidence.

And then this from Campbell:
This is just nonsensical gobbledy####. It’s the kind of contradictory doublespeak that people who are lying use when they want to obfuscate the truth.

I for one am really relieved that neither Murphy or Campbell would have an axe to grind against the franchise. Complete unbiased 3rd Party.

Speculation has it that Murphy, once hired as the Flames' GM, may ask Colin Campbell to be his coach. Campbell is the NHL's director of hockey operations.

We should be playing tomorrow night, no question.
Treliving hasnt yet spoken, so he should be ripping the league a new one.
Probably pointless, actually almost certainly pointless, but could the Flames have challenged? Don't get the logisitics here because the call on the ice was a goal. Oilers didn't challenge. How did the league get involved then?
I realize the same guys reviewing the initial call, however initiated, are reviewing the challenge call...maybe there should be two independent reviewers one for getting the initial call on the ice right (and in this case, who made the decision here) and another one for the challenge.
Yes I realize a penalty would be called if Flames lost challenge, but chances are anyone outside of the group think going on in the league office, scared ####less so telling the other 3 to agree so they can say it was unamimous, would've used common sense and ruled in the Flames favour.
But like the Kane salary cap and contract situation, league very happy to sweep things under the rug and move on. If there is another kicking motion goal in the playoffs, the league will be ####ting bricks on how to handle it.
And there will be some modification in the offseason to the rule, almost certainly.

I don't know what they could have challenged. The league had their mind made up as wrong as it was and weren't going to change it and make themselves look even more incompetent.

The NHL should probably just stop talking, unless they're going to say they screwed up.
These excuses are just so lame.

Have yet to hear anyone address this.
This isn’t the NFL when every scoring play near the end of the game is reviewed.
Goal was called on the ice. Oilers didn’t challenge.
What exactly took place? Simple question. No answer. Stunning really

At some point in the years ahead, lips will loosen from someone involved in whatever process happened there in that room, when they don’t work for the league anymore, and we will get the real story.

Remember that time Wideman took out a linesman and we went from the least penalized team to the most overnight? Took Brian Burke flying down for a face to face with the league officials to stop it.
Make no mistake - this is a an old boys club. If there was any integrity at all they admit they screwed up and everyone moves on.
There was no distinct kick. Gambling, new building, heck wanting Johnny out early so he re-signs in the US. The people at the controls are not paragons of integrity.
This was some vendetta stuff. Hell, ask an OILERS fan, and they’ll tell you.

The league's explanation is almost as bad as the call.
The rules of the game are not rules in the NHL, just guidelines. Who knows how things will be called from game to game. Officials take lots of leeway in how calls are made, and they influence games all the time with their own idiosyncratic applications.
It makes the NHL game so much worse.
