What about Monahan (25% retained) + Zary for 2x 3rds or something?
I like Zary but I like Pelletier, Coronato and Wolf quite a bit more and there is a drop off after that imo that wouldn't be enough of a sweetener. Getting a couple 3rds with our lack of picks would be good with our scouts. I think zary is a mid 6 C at best but more likely pushed to wing than become even backlund quality. Zary better than alot give him credit for but not as good as alot hope probably either. I dunno, just spit balling

Packaging Zary together with Monahan is a terrible idea, unless you're getting a really good asset in return.

What Monny did a few years back is pretty irrelevant when you consider the number and seriousness of his injuries.
Monny is not a player who needs a change of scenery. He likely needs a new body.

He got his hip repaired in the offseason, but then his other hip let him down this season. With 2 healthy hips, he could still potentially be an effective player.

There are tons of examples of guys bouncing back after being written off as 'broken'.
There are far fewer examples of guys under age 30 failing to make it back (at least with non-concussion issues).

Monahan's injuries just seem worse than a guy declining naturally and needing a better fit to milk whatever is left
Both wrists and hips for a guy who isn't fast and his shot was by far his best asset. Just sounds like wishful thinking for him to get back even to a 20/20 level and he's not suited to 3C or 4C imo. Basically we are talking about a powerplay specialist with character who is probably a guy loved by everyone. It sucks. I read the Monahan thread from the beginning when he first broke in and it was hard to read knowing what was to come for the guy. Super crappy deal all around and very limited options available

Pasta, Seguin, Kuch all had some type of hip surgeries
Monahan’s problem is not just injuries. His skillset is limited.

None of those guys were broken in the same way Monahan is though. Monahan's season has ended early (or should have ended early) for like 5 seasons in a row now and his play has fallen off a cliff. There are certainly not tons of examples of guys who have experienced what he has physically who have rebounded to have strong ends to their careers.
Theofleury nailed it above, groin and hip surgeries for a guy who can't skate well + wrist surgeries for a guy whose best asset is his shot is not a good combination. Monahan may rebound to contribute "something" for a team in the future but it will take a miracle to get back anywhere close to what he was.

You pretty much agreed with what I said, he has one great skill and the rest of his game is below average. That’s why injuries impact him more

You need to be patient with players like Zary.
He is starting to break out in the AHL and by what I’m hearing is starting to look dominant at times.
We need to keep Pellitier, Wolf, Coronato and Zary.
With the big contracts we will have to fork out for our top line guys we will need young cheap talent to fill out the roster.

Seguin is not close to being the player he once was.
And none have had the plethora of injuries and series Monny has had.
We saw how he (didn’t) recover from his last hip surgery. Now one to his other hip.
And it’s not like that is his only problem. He’s never recovered his shot.

Teams will need to see him prove that before committing financial assets to him.

I don’t think Zary will ever be a star, but there is still plenty of time for him to establish himself as a good NHL player. Think good all around 2-3 line player.

Tarasenko was kind of written off before this season. Best comparable for a hopeful outcome I can think of. But Monahan may be more of a Cheechoo. The good news is that Cheechoo was traded - other teams still thought they could get something out of him.

Mangiapane is a clear priority #3 and depending what Gaudreau and Tkachuk get, there might not be enough left.
|
I don't really see it that way, getting rid of one of Lucic or Monahan's contracts would be enough:
Gaudreau(10.5M/8) - Lindholm(4.85M) - Tkachuk(9M/8)
Mang(4.5M/5)-Backlund(5.35M) - Toffoli(4.25M)
Coleman(4.9M) - Dube(2.3M) - Pelletier(0.863M)
Lucic(5.25M) - Ruzicka(1.25M/2) - Carpenter(1M/1)
Hanifin(4.95M) - Andersson(4.55M)
Kylington(3M/3) - Tanev(4.5M)
Mackey(0.912M) - Valimaki(1.55M)
Stone(0.750M/1)
Markstrom(6m)
Vladar(0.750M)
Cap Hit - 80,975,833
Leaves us with roughly 1.5M in cap space next year, all the big guys are signed, we still have Lucic... Monahan is the only one we'd get rid of in this scenario - and maybe he gets another full year of LTIR to recover, so potentially wouldn't have to trade.

Now add 1.5 m for the 13th and 14th forward u left out. 0 space and mang isnt signing for 4.5 after this season.

Probably not nope, and honestly I think mang is the one that needs to go after this season, being that he’s the RFA and can at least be traded for assets, while the flames focus on signing the more critical top line UFA duo in gaudreau and tkachuk.
I think Mang is the most replaceable (relatively, will still be a downgrade) and I’d rather keep some money to maybe resign Gudbranson, and if you told me I would say that at the beginning of the season I would have had you committed to an institution

2 League min contracts could do it. I think we could get Mang for 4.5M, or 5M... No doubt it is tight, but I don't think it is impossible... The ideal situation might be for us to buy out Monahan, and trade Lucic (or he retires) if possible. That would free up enough cap to sign everyone.

A valiant try. But I have a hard time imagining Sutter being okay with starting two rookies in the third D pair.
Someone on your depth chart earning $4M or higher won’t be back next season.
