Treliving has done plenty of rentals so I'm still expecting a depth forward.

If you're in management, and you believe in the team you've iced this is the right move, and with their effort this season, this group deserves their shot. If the Flames don't win the cup over the next two years, Treliving will be gone, and the team is another step down the rung in two years. Hard not to acknowledge his resolve.
I respect the compete, finish and professionalism of Toffoli, but I don't believe this makes the Flames faster up front, and that may end up being the fatal flaw. Hopefully I'm wrong and this group can will it's way to a cup, we shall see, but even someone who is not a fan of the deal has to appreciate the commitment to team and fans.
For too long the Flames have been neither fully committed to the present or the future, and that flacid approach produced predictable results. Good on management for being definitive and good on this group for earning this boost.

Agreed. They made a call one way or another.

Looch has been playing an incredible role and is a fixture on the 2nd PP unit so rewarding him with some 3rd line minutes while being super comfortable with Toffoli already would be ideal IMO. Added bonus in potentially getting Monahan to open back up 5 on 5 as he’s been showing flashes but Dube and Ritchie have been snake bitten.

I agree with the chemistry of the BFF line, but I worry about their foot speed.

I don't think the cost was high at all.
The 1st round pick is trending to be a late round 1st and it's top 10 protected. Heinemen looks like an OK prospect but not even close to a blue chipper or anything like that.
And Toffoli isn't a rental.
The Flames could probably have him for 2 full seasons and then trade him for a very similar return at the deadline in 2024 should they be sellers at that point in time.

There is one direct flight from Montreal tonight. It's scheduled to land about 10 minutes before 11:00.

BIG move today, definitely didn’t expect this to happen so soon. But it sounds likes it definitely rocked the hockey world today because the Flames were all over the news and we never headline anything; so, good to see the spotlight on us for once instead of McDavid and the oilers.
The highlight today was probably seeing some of the excited faces on some of the current personnel, Lucic especially as the 2 are great friends apparently. Seems like he knows a lot of the guys on the team, so hopefully that increases team moral and further tightens the bonds of an already close team.
Overall, I’m in favor of it as I think the Flames should be all in on the season. I like that it addresses some of the weaknesses of the team, but it’s also a move that invites a lot of questions as well I think.
The Good
- Right shot
- Natural goal scorer
- Plays in all situations
- Dangerous shorthanded
- Lots of friends on the team
- Toffoli torched the Flames last season and in important games to boot. There were like 3 or 4 must win games down the stretch and he crushed the Flames in every one of them I think
- I’m hoping this move ultimately helps light a fire under Sean Monahan since his even strength production has been absolutely putrid this season. Like, even the defensemen on the team have produced more and that includes Gudbranson and Zadarov. If Toffoli comes in and fixes the 3rd line, then the Flames may be on the precipice of contending here.
The Questions
- Slotting: I’m not sure what we should expect in terms of production. He’ll be playing on the 3rd line most likely, so I can’t imagine he’ll be averaging 17 minutes a night like he’s currently use to.
- Linemates: Considering how close he is to Lucic and how much success he had as line mates, I’m hoping to see a Lucic-Monahan-Toffoli line. Although sadly, this does push Dube down the depth chart, probably deservingly though ad he’s had a downright awful season. Still young though, so hopefully it’s a teachable moment that’ll help him down the road.
- Salary Cap: A move like this without salary going back next season creates problems and almost assures major move(s). Obviously Treliving is all in on this season and I don’t blame him, I’m on a similar wavelength. But it appears he has decided to kick the can down the road and deal with the problems later. I have to suspect Kylington will be squeezed hard on his next contract here.
Overall, I just hope the Flames can have a nice long run through the playoffs. With the pandemic hopefully out of the way and sunnier days ahead, would be nice to put on the Flames jersey and celebrate on the red mile again

I think it's interesting that I have heard no player or coach comments about Tyler Pitlick, including wishing him the best. I am definitely excited to see Toffoli adding scoring depth. Great add.

I think Montreal truly made out like bandits in the end:
- Signed Toffoli as a UFA
- First season he scores at a 40+ goal pace for them
- Helps Montreal win 3 rounds en route to a Stanley Cup finals appearance
- Then is traded for a 1st round pick, 5th and Heineman

First thing out of Treliving’s mouth after the formal announcement was to wish Pitlick well, say he’s a good player that just had it tough here. He said it again later.

Yeah, Montreal isn’t hurting. If anything Vancouver should feel bad.

I would like to see them try this.
Gaudreau/Lindholm/Tkachuck
Manigiapane/Backlund/Coleman
Pelletier/Monahan/Taffoli
Lucic/Ruzicka/Dube
Dube has played well with Lucic in the past, and if he has to shift to wing he's been more effective on the right side than the left, so I'd try that again.

Vancouver fans are definitely bitter about this. Lots of dumb comments how we got fleeced and compared it to what Benning paid for Toffoli. Forgetting the fact that they paid that for 17 games of Toffoli, while we have him for 2.5 years. Though they didn't lose him to us directly, Benning choosing to re sign Virtanen instead of Toffoli came back to bite them in the A. Can't wait for Toffoli to LIGHT them up for the next 2.5 years.

asset and narrative wise, absolutely and good point. fans there need to embrace the rebuild
on the flip side fans also have to watch a team 'in the moment' and this team has a .240 winning percentage, and just traded one of their good players (under control for 2 more years) so I get why it also might feel kind of crappy for a Habs fan

Not sure about bandits but it is good asset management.
