I mean, Tippett's a really good coach, teams he's left have done worse. Tod McClellan had a great run in San Jose. They are both good coaches.
Look at the difference in buy-in here for Gaudreau this year, he's all over the puck not just playing offense, he's playing a very responsible game, and it's paying off for stats and wins. The Oilers top guys just refuse to do it.
I don't believe for a second Tippett was coaching McDavid to kind of drift around and not really do anything below the blue line. But waiting for the puck and streaking up ice got him into the NHL, so he wants to keep doing it. It's not working, and all the coaches they've had up there know it.
This is fantastic.

This is the problem with their team and fans. "Arguably" the best 2 players on this planet? Well, he's correct on the "arguably" part, there are a lot of argument on that statement.
Remember when people were worried that they were going to get competent management because they hired Cup-winner Peter Chiarelli?
Remember when people were worried that they were going to get competent management because they fired Chiarelli and hired multiple-Cup-winner Ken Holland?
Good times.

It’s always the same. They’ll be good with McLellan. They’ll be good with Tippett. They’ll be good because Puljujarvi is coming back. They’ll be good because they signed Hyman. They’ll be good because Kane is there now.
So funny. As long as Lowe is there and Katz permits his influence... the culture will always be toxic to the point where there is not a person alive that could turn that team around
Lowe's entitled arrogance and idiocy combined with his influence will ensure they are always mediocre at best as long as he is there
They've actually had some good coaches. But the organization is so rotten to the core that they never stood a chance
Holland is bad. Chiarelli was bad. MacTavish was bad. But there was never a chance they would be anything but
Culture is underrated. Not just with Edmonton but in general across all industries. If you have toxic culture you don't have a chance for sustainable success imo
The oilers won't have that chance until Lowe is fired and Katz hires people to fix the culture and lets them do it with no interference.
When Barrie told Ceci to remember that the Toronto players weren't his friends now and his response was something like "I don't have any friends here either" (paraphrasing)... that just summed the oilers culture up perfectly
Not to mention all the other evidence from the last 20 years. Don't feel like citing it... but nearly every foot in mouth moment they've had has been a window into their culture
Kevin Lowe might be the worst hockey executive in history given the length of his rule, lack of results and the sheer amount of things like the Barrie/Ceci thing that have popped up over the years. You can't really track that stuff but if I had to guess... that organization has endured 3x the amount of embarrassing incidents as the average nhl franchise for the last 20 years. Luckily for them, their fans and media not only put up with it... but defend it. There is no other franchise like this in the NHL since I've been watching for the last 30 years

Yeah, in 12 months or less Holland is the next one to walk the plank.
Who knows what the final straw was, my guess is Tippett was as disgusted as most of the journalists were about the Kane thing, and he was probably told from above how to play Kane.
Normally there's a bit of smoke from there usual media crew up there, and while there was a bit, this was probably just as much Holland.
But there's one guy that's been at the centre of this for over 25 years that has insulated himself for the mistakes him and his ego make in trying to be the modern day Glen Sather, in regards to treating some players different, overruling coaches and managers time and again.
Remember when people were worried that they were going to get competent management because they fired Chiarelli and hired multiple-Cup-winner Ken Holland?
Good times.
I think everyone knew Holland was a decade past his 'best before date'. I don't remember anyone being too worried about this one. More of a collective "ha ha, stupid Oilers!"
Oh the zhitshow up there will be hilarious.
Tippet could handle Kane....whats this new guy gonna do....curl up in the fetal position in the corner when Kane blows up the locker room.
