Everything is getting cancelled. If any of you follow curling the mixed olympic trials were cancelled this week along with most of the womens provincials and a Grand Slam event in a couple of weeks. The Scotties in Thunder Bay in a month is in serious jeopardy. So no surprise here of this cancellation.

Having 2 goalies room with each other in a covid world is also very stupid planning.

It's not a good look to continue playing the men's games with a potential Covid outbreak looming while cancelling women's games a month down the road...

They cancelled all IIHF events in January with the exception of the U21 Mens A Group (ie World Juniors). Three women's events and two mens events I believe. But the optics were horrible I agree, cancelling these other events (two years in a row now for the female U18) but somehow finding a way to reschedule the mends U18 last year. To reschedule this event and not the others sends a very poor message.

At least 4 football bowl games cancelled outright, including the Holiday Bowl last night which was cancelled on a few hours notice. This thing is affecting more than just hockey. However the international teams and players in hockey (IIHF and also NHL) certainly complicate rule making and decision making for hockey's governing bodies. NHL for example is having a much more difficult time adapting than the NFL due to border issues that other leagues do not need to take into consideration.

Did they ever announce how many players actually tested positive and whether they actually had symptoms? If they did have symptoms how severe?

Through various articles I think I saw four? Two on the US, one on Russia and one on the Czech’s. I haven’t seen another saying anything different.

So all of the teams would have had enough players to compete. None of the players were probably in any danger. They are all healthy teenagers.

I’d say if that’s the level of risk the IIHF is willing to assume before cancelling a tournament that might be the last one for a while.

It’ll be interesting to see how it gets spun in the media.

I am a staunch supporter of your quips, but this one needs refinement.

The proper call would be to stop testing vaccinated people if they don’t have symptoms so we can start living again.

Has there been an official statement or release by the IIHF?

Maybe, or just so they don’t have to drive home late. Who knows. Or else they are from somewhere even worse.

The CFL dodged a bullet in wrapping their season when it did….there is no way that league would have been prepared (and I say that as a CFL fan) for this wave.

These are tough decisions.

There is money involved so they don't want a bubble. Leading up the tournament Omnicron wasn't a thing and it looked like the NHL etc seasons were working.

It came on fast and hard, and they had Alberta change the rules on them a week before the tournament started.

People can always make better decisions, but pretty much any organization/leader is desperately trying to find a line between 100% economics and 100% health and they are bound to not get it right.

Just so tired of the know it alls with hindsight.
So leading up to the tournament with Every Canadian NHL game being postponed we are not able to say this was bound to happen without either a bubble or relaxed testing/protocols. I think most of us knew this was going to be a train wreck waiting to happen.

But i do get it, there's lots of moving parts and red tape.

Four players with no symptoms and they pull the pin.

Seems like a bit of an over reaction? Or is there more to the story?

Looking like it’s about time for the sporting world to reassess the level of risk it’s willing to accept or just shut everything down. It’s just organized chaos right now. It’s not sustainable.

You knew the tournament wasn’t going to go ahead months ago before anyone even knew what omicron was?

Because that’s how long ago people would have had to have known if it was going to be played in a bubble.

You knew nothing until the nhl omicron breakout and even then, you didn’t know for sure how it would affect the world juniors until about a week ago when the teams were already in Canada and by then it was too late.

Apparently a few officials tested positive too. Still seems like an overreaction. Especially if there were no symptoms.
