Keep in mind that the flames were having to outplay some terrible goaltending from Mike Smith early that year. This year they are playing very well and are complimented by some excellent goaltending.
The team play that year was really good until the all star break, and they never got back to the dominant level of play again after that.
Hopefully this years excellent play can be maintained until the playoffs.

He was great. He added another element that IMO Hrudey for whatever reason simply isn't capable of.
Kind of felt like a national broadcast with Millen instead of a local one with Hrudey.

Count me in the camp that found Millen to be a refreshing change of pace.
I used to find he had that annoying whiny pessimist attitude (Gary Galley and Ray Ferraro do this too) but I found he really seemed to not get too focused on micro criticisms and had some balanced observations, didn’t talk too much and wasn’t afraid to adjust his commentary when he noticed something different and correct himself.

Remember how choked Sutter was that at the beginning of the season everyone else started Tuesday and we had to wait 8 full days between the last Exhibition and the Saturday start against the Oilers who had 2 games played already.
The very compacted, road heavy schedule comment is absolutely fair. Nothin easy about it.
The Team, driven by Sutter sure has put that behind them!

Vladar has really been playing inspiring hockey lately. I have more faith in him than Rittich.
Boston’s decline was going to be soon here. How long can they keep relying on Patrice to be elite? They are in for some tough times when he retires. Kudos to this group for sticking to the game plan. Their tenacity and conditioning have been markedly better in comparison to years past.

I like what Millen adds including calling Vladar, at least once, Valdore.

I've mentioned it before on here but I just can't stand Hrudey as the color guy, I can't even watch the SN telecast anymore if he's on and have been watching the other team's telecast.
I like him as a person and think he's good on the panel too but he's just not a good color guy analyst, he doesn't shut up and isn't able to make his points without rambling on and on and in the meantime the game's going that Ball should be calling.

Since Oct 16th, only the Flames and Detroit have played 19 games. The other 30 teams have averaged 16 games each (COL has played 13).
On top of playing the most games, they have also played the most road games, and the most back-to-back games.
So yeah, the comments are more than fair.

To put it another way...
During that time, the Flames have recorded points in 16 of 19 games. Only 12 other teams have played more than 16 games, and 11 teams have played less than 16 games.

Really? A five and a seven game road trip? Not sure what your definition of a "soft schedule" is then.

My definition of soft schedule: previous years records of teams played, roster issues due to covid.

So playing more games than anybody else in the same span of time, and 12 of them in long road trips two time zones away, including a span of 8 games in 13 days, against teams that, in the aggregate, had a slightly above average record this season at the time the Flames played them… this all means nothing to you. All righty, then.
I guess some people will do anything to avoid giving credit.

So the records of a team that probably had different guys on it, playing in an irregular and ridiculous division play only format is relevant. Grueling travel and a compressed schedule isn't. Interesting.

Previous year’s record? So a game against the Coyotes is tougher than one against the Ducks? OK.
Why not the records this year? Calgary has played teams that are currently doing well.
How about number teams on the second half of BTB? How about playing BTB yourself? How about backup goalies versus number one? 4 games in 5 nights?

Leafs flyers rangers bruins devils preds capitals…wings and ducks have surprised…add on a ton of travel and road games. I think you’re really reaching on this one and not sure I’d be doubling down.
I mean sure they haven’t played the Florida teams, Oilers much or teams in the central. But really feels like you’re grasping at straws here
But hey that’s just me
Edit: didn’t mean to pile on here lol

Well, speaking of previous year records, Flames have played the last years cup finalist Habs, the semi finalist Isles, Boston, Pittsburgh, Toronto, Washington, Nashville, and the preseason cup finalists Oilers.

Lost to leafs, lost to preds, the rest of those teams were bottom feeders last year save for NY. Even NY is a year removed from drafting Lafreniere, and Kakko. Phillidelphia is a head case team. Never dependable. Washington is still the best team we beat during our run. Even then we barely eked that one out.
The travel to me doesn’t mean much since it’s early in the year and we have had few if any injuries with a back up playing well. The flames always lead the league in travel distance or close to. It’s the nature of our latitude and longitude. So all in all I don’t feel as if it’s some measure of difficulty added.
When the team plays Winnipeg, Edmonton, Vegas, Colorado, Dallas again, St. Louis, Nashville more often then I may reset my parameters. None of the wins have said this team is elite. I think we are better off than years previous but look at the team that finished 1st in the west, they were thoroughly trounced in the first round. Second round or bust for this squad at the minimum.
The flames will not keep up this pace. If they do then they will contend for top of the presidents trophy, I still think they finish 3rd or worse is the pacific.
Non of the homer crowd is going to dissuade me. I made a wager and no one, I don’t ignore, bit on it.

Isles were out four top defenceman and their top PWF. Habs were lucky to ride Carey to the final. They were terrible last year despite their run. They put it together in the playoffs. They were the last seed only because of our ineptitude. Reaching on that one I’d say. They made the cup finals but were obliterated by Tampa. Pittsburgh didn’t have carter,Crosby nor malkin. Boston has lost tuuka task and Bergeron pasta and marchy have only a mercurial Taylor hall as support?
I just don’t see a work beater yet. I see a more hungry team who is getting early positive results but I’m undeterred as of yet.
