I think we would only hold it against brad if he lets Gaudreau walk in free agency. If Brad can't get him signed to a fair contract then I don't know if you can fault him that much as he can't force Gaudreau to stay. Brad does have to deal with this by the deadline one way or another or the pitchforks will surely come out.

And that's the problem. If he's not signed by the deadline, I doubt Calgary trades him while they are contending. And who even knows if Johnny's list of 5 teams has any teams that would realistically trade for a rental? I think that assuming Calgary is decent this year the ship on trading Johnny has sailed.

Calgary gains cap space if he leases as a UFA. It happens. It's not the end of the world. Some teams are even better for it.

Considering age and performance, Gaudreau is the premiere player available in 2022 free agency, and it is a pretty big drop off as you go down the list.

https://www.si.com/hockey/news/the-t...agents-of-2022

From a business perspective, he would be smart to go to free agency and take advantage of this once in a career opportunity.

If Johnny got the same deal as Panarin, and he well might, 7x $11.6M = 81.2M

8x10.75 = $86M.

Go to $11M for an even $88M.

They won’t get to keep him at a discount. They’ll have to pay him.

Personally, I would.

EDIT: Hell, I’d keep Gaudreau at 8x $11.6M ($92.8M) It’s not like he doesn’t deserve it, he’s the entire offense.

Lindholm was a 45 point 2nd line C/W without him.

Monahan.

Tkachuk would lose a foot race to Monahan.

The whole thing needs to be blown up if 13 leaves.

So would I. He is the heartbeat of the offense.

That's what we thought when Gio's contract went off the books but that money went into a bunch of depth players that aren't difference makers. The Flames without Gaudreau is probably not going to be pretty.

Same think happened to NYI when Tavares fled.

Of course, NYI have played better since he left, and the Flames look better too.

Not saying there is a direct correlation, but it hasn't been a tragedy.

The Islanders had Barzal.

Who do we have?

Lindholm. The last 4 years their numbers aren't that different. In fact, Lindholm scores more goals.

Because he plays with Gaudreau.

Lindholm is to Matthew Barzal what Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is to Johnny Gaudreau.

^ I say we go after Forsberg regardless. If we can nab Forsberg, extend Johnny and move Chucky I believe we'll make the cap work.

True, but would the Flyers be ok committing nearly 75% of their cap dollars towards just forwards? I don't know what their GMs plans are, but I feel more optimistic today than I did in the past about Johnny staying put and not racing off to Philly as soon as his contract was over.

Johnny said in the summer that he never said he wanted to leave; that was a complete fabrication by a hack of a writer and even Gaudreau's agent said much the same.

JG has always brought his best to both Philly and Boston. Nothing to read into but playing well in front of friends/family.

No it really isn't. That's why I felt a big move needed to be made in the summer. I was trying to trade Hanifin and Monahan any chance I had. $11M in cap space could've done wonders for this team.

This is on Treliving to fix now though. As good as he is using leverage to get deals done at really excellent cap hits, his toughest summer will be this up coming one when he has 4 of the team's top producers all needing new, expensive deals. Good luck to him.

In hindsight, he probably should've signed Mangipane to a longer term deal which is what I personally hoped he had done back in 2020 because this kid was as sure of a thing as it gets.

They can move some of those forwards if need be.

I have little doubt Johnny would sign a contract with with the Flames, as long as the price is right. And that’s the rub.
