Monahan has been competing, forechecking well, and has been responsible defensively. He isn't producing a whole lot yet, but the effort, the attention to detail, and the work ethic are there.

LOL
9-5-0 = 18 points
7-3-4 = 18 points
How in the hell is that sugar coating it?
Do you know what does not equal 18 points? 7-7-0

Monahan has definitely been working hard and is playing with grit and determination I didn’t know he had.
But still, at the end of the day, he’s a $6M center and a former 6th overall pick. There’s a certain standard for him to live up to and just being that hard working guy who’s giving it his all isn’t good enough.
Darryl has said that this isn’t a team with a ton of elite skill, so the guys they do have who are relied upon and paid to produce, have to produce. Otherwise, this team will be on the losing end of a lot of close games which is exactly what we’ve seen in the last 3 games. 3 very close games where just 1 extra goal would’ve made all the difference.

I’m not seeing the attention to detail really. He still seems to lose track of people and is prone to a bad giveaway. He competes hard. He always has, one of the tougher players on the team.

Never thought I'd see Monahan and compete in the same sentence. I think he competes the least of any player the Flames have had the last few years. Sutter seems to be working on that and it does seem to be working because he does compete harder than the past.

sugercoat? go talk to Gary and the NHL on their point standings
4 OTL=2 Wins
do the math
And if you still don't think these points matter the Flames had more wins than the Stanley Cup runner up last season but missed the playoffs...4OTL's would have had them in and Montreal out
7-7=14 Points
7-3-4=18 Points
9-5=18 Points
Math
The record is 7-3-4 to say its anything else is wrong
OTL is also .500 in points percentage and a Loss is 0.00
big difference

It's very simple, dino7c. A .500 points percentage, in a league with loser points, will put you near the bottom of the league. If you ignore all the Flames' loser points, they have a .500 points percentage, and if you count everyone else's loser points, most teams are above .500. You have to exclude the Flames' loser points, and only the Flames', to prove that they are one of the worst teams in the league.
Math is in any case, as we all should know by now, a racist sexist cisheteronormative tool of patriarchal oppression. Only The Narrative counts. The Narrative, in this case, says that the Flames are the worst.

IMO an OT loss is just as good as a tie, since actual 5v5 hockey has finished. Loser points are less of an issue for me. If anything, it's the teams with OT and shout-out wins that are padding their records, as those don't exist in the playoffs.

I don’t love Monahan. I just don’t look for his mistakes. But aside from working hard, he’s been generating chances for Mangiapane, carrying the puck more and he’s been a beast on the boards. He wins a ton of puck battles.
People that don’t see that aren’t looking - just assuming stuff and looking at the scoresheet.
Last game he was, after Gaudreau and maybe Mangiapane, the forward working hardest and making the most chances.

Why bring in Ruzicka over Dube? A. You sending Dube down to make room? B. Dube is way better. You ant to try him out over Richardson? Whatever, but it’s not a scoring role.
Monahan has been one of the better forwards over the last few games IMO.
|
Valimaki from what I have been reading is waiver exempt. The guy needs to play whether that’s top line minutes in the ahl or at least third pairing here.
Dube is faster than ruzicka but he’s snake bitten. I said he should watch from the press box. Ruzicka has size at the center position. I like to see what that looks like.
Monohan hasn’t been one of the better players. He’s slow and lacks confidence. Beast on the boards? I don’t know about that. He’s been more noticeable with his physical effort but it’s not compensating for what he used to bring when healthier. I appreciate his spirit but his play is uninspiring. Good guy bad luck. Time and injuries catch up to most if not all pros.

Larry, Curly and Moe will defend anything bad said about the Flames.

That was definitely the worst game I’ve seen them play outside of Vlader. They looked tired.
But that’s not the first time that has happened on a road trip back to back.
I give them credit for fighting for the point.

I'm watching him closely every shift that line is out there. A beast on the boards? Come on now. He doesnt win a ton of puck battles. Making the most chances? He didnt have a single shot on goal last game. He had one shot the game before that. One shot the game before that. So 2 shots in the last 3 games.
Let's both count the puck battles he wins this afternoon vs the Sens. See where he is at. I'll give credit where credit is due. You in?

I honestly think Monahan gets the most participation medals of any Flames player ever. He gets a pass because he is a likeable person I think.
If Monahan dumps a puck in or makes a pass it feels like some say he had a great game.
He is nothing more than a pp specialist and a 3rd or 4th liner at this point.
We are Flames fans, we want to see every player succeed. Remember how hard we all were on Gudbranson before season started? Not like our bias continued after we saw him play in sutters system. He has been great and even his biggest hater can't deny he's been great.
So if Monahan was playing well I'd be the first one to say he was but he really isn't playing well. Is he competing harder than years previous? Yes but that really isn't saying much. He is replaceable and we wouldn't miss him at all.

sure, I'm in.
And I said creating chances - for Mangiapane in particular. He's been passing a lot more.

Well, you read wrong. Valimaki is not waivers exempt.
Ruzicka is not coming up barring injury, or maybe even two or three injuries.
He had a shot to be the call up in camp and he blew it. Duehr made the impact, not him.

I have no clue what kind of person he is, and don't really care.
On the other hand I think Monahan gets more criticisms because of scoresheet watchers and people who make assumptions because of past performance. I mean, when the panelists comment favorably on his play are they giving him participation medals?
No, Monahan had no shots against the Leafs. Neither did a lot of Flames. But Mangiapane and Coleman had 3 each to lead the team. I'm pretty sure some of those were feeds from the centre on their line.

Look for the symbol under the terms column, indicating which players are Waivers Exempt.
Duehr and Kinnvall on the NHL roster are, and 13 players in the AHL are.
Valimaki is not.
