They also allege that current Minnesota Wild general manager Bill Guerin, who was GM for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and assistant GM for the Penguins at the time, asked Jarrod Skalde to keep the reason for Donatelli's termination quiet and that the team punished Skalde for reporting the assault and later terminated his position under the guise of pandemic-related staff cuts.
|
The green is talking about Guerin's actions, the purple is talking about the actions of the Penguins. Guerin could not have had anything to do with Skalde's firing, he had left the team ten months prior.

Upon further reflection, I acquiesce with your opinion on Guerin.
However, I believe the Pens , as an organization , are culpable.
Thanks for the discussion.

I agree that the Penguins have some #### to answer for.
And you're welcome. Thanks for being willing to have it.

Dismantle this 'Old Boys Club' entirely.
T. Hall spoke to the media on the matter and basically stated that there is very much an OBC culture still today and a good amount of secrecy that goes on within the game.
I feel like there is more rot lingering than we know of.

Well, Tom T Hall but he’s dead.

A strong message of condemnation to USA Hockey to prevent/nullify Aldrich's hiring, due to an ongoing sexual assault investigation.

That’s my point. The NHLPA had even less excuse than the Hawks.

I think a case could be made that hockey, at least in my experience, is a particularly homophobic sport. The homophobia is so internalized that when abuse like this happens, victims don't want to come forward because they don't want the stigma of being a) a victim of abuse; and b) labeled as being gay.
Just look at how Beach and Black Ace 1 were treated in the aftermath by other players. Look at Getzlaf pulling a Roger Millions during play on an NHL broadcast in 2017 and barely getting a slap on the wrist.
And if those kinds of comments and behaviours are happening at the NHL level, you know sure as shinguard that it's happening in minor hockey, in major junior, etc.

Hockey is a weird sport full of both homophobia, and bromantic male bonding. One of the teams I played for had certain players that would C@$% slap each other and P%$$ on other players in the shower. Fortunately we had a non hazing policy but humans are gross, weird and unpredictable.

I believe that is the year that Aldrich was convicted in Michigan.

Ugh, I hated when the meatheads on the team would piss on me in the shower.
Also, I remember this pic from 2010. Not a great look 11 years later, either. It's tame, but it's a good reminder that hockey culture is a good 10-20 years behind the curve on any given day and surely wasn't kind to Beach when teammates and opponents found out.

Ugh..
Hockey culture is very much behind the times and needs to be caught up.
The homophobia and hazing humiliation/abuse is dying out but in circles where guys have been around since back then when attitudes towards such things were more nonchalant, it still had the ability to persist unimpeded.
I think Quenneville put it best in his letter of resignation. Guys in the game need to be educated on ethics around the game in 2021 and what is no longer tolerable today.
