Heck at this point maybe target Tarasenko instead!

I think the Flames could of added the +++ to make it work.
Getting ahead of myself but if the Flames did not trade Bennett would they lost him to Seattle instead of Gio and if we had Gio would the Flames be more willing to include Hanifin in the deal? Right now I see Hanifin as best untouchable due to lack of depth on the blueline. With that said does a 38 year old allow a team to trade a 25 year old? Probably not

Yeah, I call BS on this.
Show me your off season prediction of the VGK going from perennial Presidents's trophy and Stanley Cup contenders to missing the playoffs in one off season.

Think of how good Mangiapane looks right now. He is that type of player with higher offensive upside.

Higher than Mangiapane? don't know about that
Mangipane is about to have a season

Well said.
He squeezes the very best hockey possible out of even the scrubbiest of groups. It's a marvel to watch.
I just want to give him enough talent to have a chance to compete with.
Do we have what it will take in that room? It's hard to say.

The rumored price seems to be pretty steep for Vegas

Beat Vegas' offer. Simple as that. We dont know any specifics at this point. If the trade is ridiculous in the end, fine. But I kind of doubt that will be the case.
Its nothing but speculation at this point but I will be pissed if the deal looks remotely beatable in the end.

If Theodore is in play I think maybe buffalo retains some, which would make sense given the number of big contracts they have.
I don't personally think it makes sense for them but as others have said, if they want to shoot themselves in the foot then let them. I feel like that equivalent package would have a bigger impact on us than it would on them.

thing about "beatable" though is it doesn't matter what we think...maybe Buffalo absolutely loves Krebs or someone
We can say so and so is better but that is irrelevant. Their rumored prospect made the Vegas Golden Knights...ours didn't make the Calgary Flames

Vegas was the most asset-rich franchise in NHL history from JUMP. There's no competing with the prospect and asset capital they accumulated.
It's too bad, and highly disappointing for the Flames because it keeps them in the dreaded middle zone. Not bad enough to get high draft picks, too good for ownership to greenlight a rebuild. This was an opportunity to edge into elite territory and have a fighter's chance, or to totally bomb out and do a proper rebuild.
Now, we can hope that more tinkering on the edges solidifies this roster as a playoff contender. It's a scary proposition with some huge contract renewals on the horizon and a history of inconsistent performance from those players.
|
I think if you acquire Eichel, doing a proper rebuild if things bomb, is off the table for several years. If things bomb, it assumes that Eichel does not return to form, and then you are stuck with a $10 million cap hit which you likely have to give up assets for just to get off the roster. Then you are also trying to rebuild without the assets you traded away (assuming a top prospect and at least one 1st round pick).
If you get Eichel, you are all in for the foreseeable future. There is no egress once that trade is made.

If it involves Theodore and Krebs plus a bunch of picks is that ridiculous enough?

Me too.
This team will get elite coaching for a couple years and top 10 goaltending. If you come up short in getting it that one piece that could push you over the top when these guys hit the block once in a blue moon and the club that seals it didn't have to pay out the nose to make it happen.. then you've failed at doing your job here.
If Vegas wins out, they'd better pay a price that makes the risk as great as the reward.
Its really important that treliving is actively involved until the conclusion of this.

I think Vegas may think they can live with a temporary bomb caused by not having their stars. Miss the POs this year and then come back with a full slate next year. They may therefore try and lottery protect a 2022 pick or make it the 2023 pick instead. They will have to shed salary even without Theodore though.

Glass wasn't a great pick at 6th overall.
They made a bit of a mess of their cap and goalie situation with the whole Fleury / Lehner debacle.
Firing Gallant for DeBoer is still a bit questionable IMO.
Difference is the expansion draft allowed them to have a stock pile of assets because other teams really screwed up that expansion draft, and that means that the mistakes they have made can be covered up easily.
And then the other thing is that we are talking about the city of Las Vegas here...which provides an advantage that Calgary just can't compete with in terms of getting guys like Stone and Pietrangelo to go there to start with.
|
Right, I realize they've made mistakes, but like I said, they haven't made a ton of them.
At the end of the day though, their ability to target the right players to play the system that they wanted to deploy was excellent managerial execution. They wanted to play with pace and check like fiends and their brain trust found the right pieces to do it.
Had the Flames been able to execute to a similar degree instead of making bad misjudgment after bad misjudgment, then the Flames would have had a more successful run during their window.
But alas, here we are, competing once again with the Golden Knights for the services of another star player and it looks like history will repeat itself.

I think they are also OK with it because they have not had to endure hard times yet, something which is usually a right of passage for teams before they are a contender.
When they first came into the league, the owners probably accepted a few years of losing. We can all go on about how they were "gifted" a contender, but I don't believe anyone, even the Vegas management or owners, saw that happening. If they bomb out for a few years, they are just going to be doing it later than they originally counted on.
The Flames on the other hand, I don't believe have the stomach for that.

I don’t know where this Theodore stuff is coming from. Back in the summer sources had Reilly Smith as the roster player in the Vegas bid. Maybe they have upped the ante. But Smith seems like a more likely piece.

That's a lot different than "swinging for the fences". If all it means to you folks is putting our best offer forward within reason fine. But there's a lot of "pay any price" talk and then when I ask "does that mean XXX?" the response is "no that would be silly". Example: Mangiapane - too much to include?

It's coming from their recent D moves. Hutton signed as a UFA, Whitecoud extension.
