Pitch clocks and other things to speed up the game aren't bad per se, but I don't see them drawing in new fans. Baseball's problem is it's pretty much meaningless for 5/6 of the regular season, and then for maybe a couple teams its meaningful for the last 1/6. Postseason baseball is great, but regular season is just too tedious for anyone but the die hards. But the die hards have still made it an obscenely rich sport, it's just already peaked long ago and has legitimately no shot of getting back to what it was.

All sports have long-term problems with how much other entertainment is out there and that the younger generations don't care about sports like we did. Which is why I fully expect sports to go big time all-in on gambling, cause once your money is involved you are obviously going to care.

Yeah, you hit the nail on the head in all regards. I wonder how sports gate revenue will start dwindling if they allow virtual reality in the near future. If you can get the feel of the ball park by being nearly full immersed, why do you need to go to the game in person? That's why I think there will be a reluctance to allow it initially. But like you say, betting is going to be huge near term as it explodes.

Maybe this has been asked/answered already but why does baseball have a marathon 162 game regular season followed by a super short post season with very few teams?

How on earth is the ALDS/NLDS series a best of 5?? It makes no sense to me at all.

There used to be no ALDS, NLDS or Wild card games either.

Used to be 4 divisions, 162 games with 4 division winners and straight into the league championship series'

Two round of best of 7 following a 162 game season.

I'm sure you knew that, but just saying. This round of best of 5 didn't even used to exist.

So what's going on with Boston's pitching situation? They've already used 3 of their starters from the regular season and it's only the 4th inning of game 1. Are they gonna platoon every game? Makes no sense.

Where do the Rays keep finding these pitchers?

Their payroll is 70 mil vs 184 for Boston. Impressive.

Yes I knew that, its really the minimum they could have done IMO. I guess we are already offending the 'purists'.

Fricken Rays.

Isn't it bad enough we gotta deal with the goddamn yankees and red sox all the time?

Why the couldn't the frugal, perfectly run franchise from Florida be the Marlins??

The rays are really fun. I feel bad that you guys hate them so much that was a fun game. Good to see Cruz finally start to make good contact again.

He was drafted 31st overall by the Rays. He played for USF so literally found him in their back yard coming off Tommy John.

I don't hate the Rays the way I hate the Red Sox and Yankees.

For some reason I only really hate the Rays when they are playing the Jays.

I'm just saying I wish they weren't in our division, because the division would be hard enough with just the Bosox and Yanks in it.

I'd like the Rays a lot more if they would just move them to Montreal and call them the Expos. I absolutely do love how they find a way to squeeze every drop out of every nickle they spend. I can't think of a more efficient North American Sports Franchise than what they are. They work harder and innovate more than any other team, so I do root for them come playoff time. Granted if they moved to Quebec, they'd likley become useless and corrupt...which would sit well with Jays fans.

The surplus value the Rays get from their players is almost unbelievable.
Their amateur and pro scouting is incredible, they have a model of the type of hitter and pitcher they want and they routinely scout and acquire them.
When players who are due for big raises in arbitration or UFA they deal them and the players they acquire are under team control and are often good.

The Archer for Meadows, Glasnow and Baz trade is a franchise altering trade for the Rays, and now Archer is back with the Rays.
Adames and Richards for Rasmussen and Feyereisen, another great piece of work. Adames and Richards both have arb rights, both due for significant raises, they have Wander Franco so losing Adames doesn't hurt them, plus the Rays are cheap, so they get two great relief pitchers with a combined 4 years of team control before they hit arbitration.
They do this all the time.
Blake Snell out - Mejia and Patino in return.
Smyly = Yarbrough and Mallex Smith who then turns into Mike Zunino.
On and on and on.

The thing that is annoying about the Rays to me is their totally detached fan base. Place is a ghost town for any regular season game. Talk about spoiled and undeserving fans. The sooner they move them full time to MTL, the better.

And yeah I know their stadium kinda blows. I have been there, but a winning team like this still deserves a lot more support than they get.

Location Location Location! It sucks and traffic is a nightmare. It is like Phoenix stadium in a good location people will go. Sadly ownership doesn't want to pay any of their own money towards one so all the projects keep failing.

The stadium isn't great in terms of baseballs elite but it is still decent. Experience is better than what we get here for watching hockey. The place gets very loud for the playoffs in person and is very fun! That can be said for most places though I just haven't been to any post season games else where with exception of the World Series last year. That new Texas stadium would be very fun at full capacity in the playoffs. 10k fans were nice and loud.

Conflicted:

I enjoy the White Sox getting blown out as it shows they were just pretenders with a super soft division / schedule. However, that means the Astros need to be the ones winning big.

I feel the same. The White Sox are the biggest paper tigers in sports so it's fun to see them fail spectacularly. But why does it have to be the cheating cheaters.

Looks like we're setting up for a ALCS rematch from last year.
