Some very promising aspects of the Flames’ game tonight.
Didn’t see it for a long.enough duration, but it’s there.

Has any star been so publicly nose deep in the refs business in retrospect like that?
Usually (in a competent organization) someone higher up on the team would tell you to cut it out and that it's a bad look, but the Oilers organization is spineless and would tell Connor his farts smell like flowers.
It is a bad look from a guy that's supposed to be a poster boy for the league and very loser-like behaviour.

Bonus points if you slide into the goalie.

Why not abuse him to an extreme level in this game? After the goal where he fell into the net after crashing into Markstrom… why not maul him as he’s on the ice? Even if he was not tripped he likely would have ran into markstrom so why not make him suffer for it?
I know everyone likes to say it’s preseason but the whole new identity of this team is supposed to be that, win or lose, you’re going to feel it if you play the flames. Gaudreau is feeling it tonight… why isn’t McDavid?
This was the last zero consequence game that the flames had against the oilers this year… wish they would have made them pay for it.

It’s that ‘I’m Connor McD and I have the right of way’ attitude. Drive to the net full speed and expects safe passage. What the hell is he whining about? They scored!

McDavid loves to swing behind the net and look for the pass out front. I'd love to see Zadorov catch him coming around the net.

Different skill sets entirely but both looking like they can play shutdown hockey albeit in different ways.
Hanifin is a really good skater and will be able to add some offense as well...he is the clear #1 in the sense of all around guy.
Tanev is the clear #1 in sweat and work and blocking shots way.
They compliment one another well.
Im really concerned about Andersson though, saw a lot of last years goof ups again in limited time watching tonight. Darryl needs to work with him.

If that’s tkachuk barrelling into koskinen the oilers and their media would cry bloody murder. But it’s Connor so blames the d-man. Garbage captain.

Looking at Sutter's comments about the game, he's playing a bigger game here.
He chained up the hounds tonight, and is clearly giving the other side a false sense of security going into the season about playing us.
Unlike the Oilers side who went balls out in a pre-season game for the result, Darryl is obviously highly aware of the stakes and is operating as such.
One coach here has won two cups while the other is a middle of the road scrub who plays his stars 30 minutes a game in the pre-season. One coach is actually using the pre-season as it was designed to be used.
All bets are off in a couple saturdays and I think no one will be more taken aback than McDavid if he found his treatment tonight to be unfair.
That's what I've taken away from tonight from a coaching standpoint.

Gretzky was a whiner when he was so dominant the world tried to solve his team. Kinda like Crosby. They’d won it all, and other teams tried anything to stop them.
97 is crying that the world won’t run away and let him win to begin. It’s not the consequence of beating everyone, like Gretzky and Crosby, it’s not being good enough in the first place and blaming others.
It’s a big difference.

Agreed.
Sutter is smart and knows it’s tough to play his system for 82 games.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the team seemed to fall off a little in the third after Gaudreau left. No need to go all out and risk further injuries.

I think Darryl’s comment of it being a no hitter means he’ll be all over the video tomorrow with the team showing them all the missed opportunities to punish the oilers.
They had 30 minutes of McDavid and draisaitl on the ice in a preseason game. That was an opportunity to abuse them. Lucic is not on the team to hug draisatl in the corner to give the oilers a powerplay. He’s here to make opponents feel it when he takes a penalty on them. Darryl will hate the holds and the hooks… those are lazy penalties. I doubt he’ll ever have a problem with punishing cross checks and charging calls that lead to other teams hesitating going into corners. If you’re going to take a penalty on McDavid or draisatl… make sure they’re going to feel it tomorrow.

Nice. Sutter dissatisfied with the goal where mcdavid ran into markstrom.
And alludes to the fact that the call might have been different if it wasn’t McEntitled.

Didn’t watch but really glad to read Kylington had a strong performance again. He’s had himself a great camp so far. If he could break out this season I would be quite happy.
Not overly concerned with the result. It’s preseason and our best player didn’t even play the third period.
Oh and based on the score sheet I think it’s safe to say Johnny/Lindholm/Tkachuk is solidified as our new top line.

I think the big guys reeled it in tonight because Sutter wants to save it for the games that matter. By "no hitter" I believe he meant the game wasn't given the regular season treatment.
They took it very easy on the Oilers tonight after we saw them wreck guys and lay down the law when the opponents tried to retaliate in the couple games preceding this one.
Which is why it's hilarious that Connor still has something to bitch about. He's going to have a whole lot more to be upset about when Sutter pulls out all the stops.

No kidding
And as much as I want to see The Flames run roughshod over the Oilers physically as mentioned by others above, I think it is better to take the high road in the preseason. Sets up better with the officials and the league. Can you imagine if the Flames went hard after McDavid tonight? Not a good look. Sutter wouldn't allow it IMO.
