Agreed. I think this Flames team has a good of a chance as any of the past 7 years to make the playoffs. Having the legit coach who commands the respect to get his players to buy in is a huge help especially with the expectations being set in camp.
I think the other factor is the amount of guys on the team who can bounce back and will be motivated to do so. Johnny, Mangiapane, Tkachuk, Zadorov all looking for long term deals. Monahan and Markstrom are motivated to get back to where they have been in the past.

IDK maybe we should watch them play a game first
Zadorov was a much better player than Gio in the playoffs a couple years back

....there is no comparison to be made between Zadorov and Giordano in terms of quality.
Giordano, more than 10 years Zadorov's senior, surpasses him in every valuable facet of the game. By a mile.

Zadorov was not being matched up to Playoff Nathan MacKinnon, who may be the most prolific playoff player in decades.

Definitely. Significantly - because Coleman is the best player, by quite a bit.

This will be interesting to see.
Obviously, if we look at last year, Giordano >> Zadorov.
However, Gio is 38. And, while I expect that he will probably be close to as good as last year, it is a risk.
Zadorov is 26, which is right around the age when a lot of defensemen 'get it'. Will he 'get it' this year? Who knows, some Dmen never get it. But Sutter does know a thing or two about getting defensemen to play well.

One day Gio will retire because nobody beats Father Time but we are talking about the here and now. Zadorov is nowhere near the guy just a couple of years removed from the Norris
And the comparison in terms of mix of 4 players last year vs this year, we will see who is better. Coleman had better pts/60 than Ryan last year, and Bennett’s numbers in a limited sample size in Florida were better than both. All we can do is wait and observe
Or we can just take the position that everybody new is better than everybody that left

I think better up front is pretty obvious.
I think worse on the blueline is pretty obvious.
My biggest fear is the strength never gets utilized because they can't transition the puck up to the forwards.

I think Sutters system may compensate for this. He didn't have the best transitionary Dmen in his time in LA, except Doughty. Which we don't really have one of his quality. But if Andersson can take even the slightest step forward he might suffice.
They typically attack from the D zone as a 5 man unit, so long stretch passes aren't the norm in Darryls system. From what I can see. I could be wrong.

I agree that they better up front in that they added based on positional need, getting a top 6 RW
I’ll be looking out for the stay at home + mobile pairing structure on D

Wrong. He's tougher than Giordano and is way more of a dick head.

Honestly it's a shame anyone is even comparing the two because it is unfair to Zadorov.
Yes, Zadorov likely isn't a Flame if Gio is still a Flame but it's unfair expectations to put on Zadorov.
Gio at 38 is a much better defenceman than Zadorov. Zadorov has never been even close to Gio or he wouldn't be on his 4th team at 26 years old.
I just don't see Zadorov as anything special. I am glad it is just a 1 year deal and guarantee he will be on his 5th team next year.

I don't even know about the tougher. I would put my money on Gio.
Zadorov is not tough at all. Or at least can't fight.

And if by tough, you mean durable, Gio is much more durable. Zadorov has only played more than 70 games once. In most of Gio's seasons, he hasn't missed more than 4 games.
And this is despite the age difference.

I won’t debate Gio v Zadorov.
But I will say this - there’s an unwritten preseason rule for vets that you don’t put guys through the boards on checks etc. Which is Zadorov’s strength. I think at least that aspect will improve in real games. It will also help him defend because guys won’t feel as free to try a fancy move.
