Yes let's definitely not only incentivize hostage taking but also directly fund the Taliban . Fantastic idea.

You sure about that?

Like, top of my head, cultural genocide/residential school system and putting Japanese Canadians in internment camps. Easy answers, I’m sure there are more.

Not saying this is not terrible, but cool the dramatics. Canada carries plenty of shame to fill history books.

How do we have thousands to people there to pull out? Obviously not the greatest source, but wikipedia says we sent around 3000 soldiers. Did we really have that many translators?

Yes but also not to downplay this moment which is the culmination of terrible Liberal performance on the foreign policy - sorry, Global Affairs - file.

And we're outta there at the end of the month, but things are winding down. We might get a couple of thousand more out, but the rest are being encouraged to head for the border.

Probably not a good look for a cabinet member at a press conference calling the taliban our brothers in the Taliban. No Maryam Monsef, they are not our brothers. And they're already on a murder spree, that's not going to changehttps://twitter.com/user/status/1430540669265797122

These rescue missions include families, that adds up quickly.

For example, Finland just released a statement that they will still try to rescue the locals who were employed by the Finnish embassy, which was pretty small. The list is still 180+ people.

(Finland like almost every western country abandoned their non-Finnish staff at the first stage of the rescue, and this statement only came after they were publicly shamed in our local media.)

I have a hard time criticizing Biden specifically for this. It's more like the Afghans made the whole western military decision making apparatus a global laughing stock.

Let's remember, the speed of the Taleban takeover did not catch only the US off guard, pretty much every western embassy was caught in the same mess. All of them have (or should have) their own analysts and foreign affairs experts and decision makers, who (theoretically) all make their own evaluations independently. For the smaller countries pulling their people out early would have been fairly easy, had they both predicted the development correctly and reacted to it in a timely fashion. I haven't read of any country that did that.

The exact same criticism that's been thrown at Biden and the US military intelligence is being thrown around everywhere. Germans, French and Brits are scrambling with their rescue operations just like the Americans.

Obviously a lot of people were also NOT caught by surprise, but at this point it's difficult to say who did the evaluation right and who just made a lucky guess that proved right in hindsight.

Personally I'm thinking that this was probably harder to predict the higher up the political hierarchy you are.

yes but if you are asking them directly not to murder our people calling them murdering scumbags probably isnt the best tactic either, she was making a direct plea as a Muslim to Muslims to try and save lives, she is no doubt aware this would cost her politically at home but she still did it, that's actually kind of admirable

I posted a column by a former Afghan female refugee. Its a term of respect between Muslim males in Afghanistan.

		| To call someone “brother” in Afghan culture is to recognize a mutual deep respect for them. It’s an endearing term to recognize a male friend as more than a friend, someone you’d take a bullet for. It is to validate the essence of that person and acknowledge the principles by which they live. The people of Afghanistan do not call the Taliban their “brothers” unless it is the Taliban themselves. To address a terrorist group — one that beheads Hazaras, Shia-Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus and many other minority groups — as your “brother” is to turn a blind eye on decades of war crimes committed by the Taliban. |
