There is nothing different in the building design between the original renders and the new ones. These are just slightly different angles and more people around the building in the new renders.

I thought it was the same view but I don't think it is, as mentioned the one view is looking south and you can see the Saddledome. It also says NW entrance which I didn't notice before.

It's a big if that the north side wall will look as nice as the render once constructed, and even if it ends up looking as nice as the rendering, that's still an entire block that has very limited placemaking opportunities.
 |
True. However, the north side of 12th is a blank sheet - it's an open field right now, so there is still plenty to work with there. It would certainly help if there were development along 12th, with parking behind that, as opposed to the whole block just being a parking lot.

But we shall see, of course.

It actually helped me focus on which streets where where with the Saddledome in the background. So at least that helped.

The new renders also changed the dark grey exterior shell of the parkade in the southeast corner to white.

Bet that parkade is far from finished / designed. That looks like placeholder to me.

Yeah, the new renderings have more details in the surrounding spaces, but nothing is changed with the building itself.

The original renders have the surrounding buildings as plain boxes, while the new ones give more detail and use photographs of the existing surroundings for the buildings in the distance, which is why you can see the Saddledome and Studio Bell in the new renderings.

I don't think that has changed, it just depends on the lighting. It's pretty light coloured in the original South Elevation rendering...

Sportsnet will probably use B roll footage of the Saddledome for the first 5 years.

Like the rink. I was scared they were going to make some stupid ugly aluminum shell structure like Edmonton.

This is the design that has been submitted to the city for approval. There still could be changes as the city and CSEC go back and forth on the design but I wouldn't anticipate major changes.

IIRC the approval process is expected to wrap up in December of this year followed by groundbreaking in Q1 of 2022 if there are no major holdups.

I think that the rendering doesn't show the steel substructure support (HSS) members that this will require (think of it as metal 'studs')

panels typically come out as 4x8' or 4x10' sheet, so you would need structural support that align with one of those dimensions...

any perforated surface allows the back structure to be seen though the perforations... or you can get dark spots, like the print margins of a poster... while you can get 'full bleed' prints, typically, this requires additional work to trim the edges.

With a perforated material, that would mean not perforating right up to the edges, as the HSS structure would be seen... while you can offset the panels from the structure using a girt (like hat channel) so the structure isn't right against the perforation, it is more work (and therefore cost) to do that as opposed to directly fastening the panels right onto the HSS...

no problem with perforated aluminum; not really a fan of the 'peeling back' aesthetic though as it harkens back to the 'deconstruction' aesthetic of the 80s... if you are under it, then you just see the underside of that (unless you double clad it)
 |
remember, anytime someone says something has extra cost, assume it won't be done.
then hope there isn't cost overruns and even cheaper materials get used.

It still looks like a cineplex or something to me.
The new renders jazz it up a bit, but the shape is still very meh, and the major questions about lack of street activation on the north and east sides persist.
