He has said this on numerous occasions throughout his tenure. He's the bridesmaid that is never the bride for the last number of years, and it's a big reason why this team continues to be so stale.
Since the Hanifin/Lindholm trade in 2018 Treliving has done nothing to improve or refresh the forwards on an pretty completely blah group except for a few ill advised FA signings. Rychel, Lucic and Heineman are the only trades to the forward group.
I'm sure a substantial move is imminent though.

But teams almost never part with elite young players or blue-chip prospects. What does a straight 1 for 1 or 2 for 1 hockey trade for Eichel look like? The Sabres are asking for several high-end picks and prospects in the hopes that they’ll hit on one or two of them.

We'll see how it goes. Its not impossible to do well by asking for a bunch of pieces.

I sure hope a big change is coming. Third year of waiting for a bounce back is dumb and will make for a boring season. It is too bad that Kadri nixed the deal to Calgary. I think that could have opened up some other interesting trades in the forward group.

Maybe that’s a good thing
Look how much effort he put on the defense and see what it got us.

Actually, according to this article KK would be part of an offer if Buffalo was willing to retain salary. Retain 50% salary is a BIG ask but they can't say no if you don't at least ask...?
Quote:
According to Brooks in this scenario Drury would have the green light to make the Rangers the following offer:
- 20 year old forward Kaapo Kakko, the 2nd overall pick at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft
- 21 year old centerman Filip Chytil, the 21st overall pick at the 2017 NHL Entry draft or 21 year old forward Vitali Kravtsov, the 9th overall pick at the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.
- One of 20 year old defenseman Zac Jones, picked 68th overall at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, 20 year old defenseman Matthew Robertson, selected 49th overall at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, or a first round draft pick.
This could effectively work out to be a whopping three first round picks for the Buffalo Sabres, but of course that will depend on how much value they see in the Rangers prospect pool. I suspect that the idea of retaining 50% of Eichel's salary might be too tough a pill for the Sabres to swallow, but it's not like they intend to field a competitive team in the near future if they are trading away the best player they have had in years.

Eichel at $5M is the new MacKinnon (maybe even better) salary wise. That's insanely valuable.

Not knowing much about the Rangers prospect pool I'm curious to what would a comparable offer from the Flames would be?

I know you're not asking me, but I'd say Tkachuk, Zary/Coronato/Pelletier, 2022 1st/2023 1st. The trouble is that Tkachuk is not on his entry level, but I think that's the closest I can get.

Eichel at 5 million would get almost every team in the league offering. Flames don't have a Kakko equivalent but the Ducks and Kings for sure do and then you get players like Hughes etc out of New Jersey. Flames would have zero chance of getting a 50% retained Eichel unless it is because he is completely broken.

Any team has zero chance of getting Eichel at 50% retained.

I am pretty sure it's because he is too old. Zary turns 20-years-old next month.

Which teams can actually afford a Jack Eichel trade?
Quote:
The Jack Eichel situation seems to have reached its breaking point in Buffalo, going from contentious to downright ugly.
He clearly wants to have his preferred surgery, he clearly wants moved somewhere else, and it only seems to be a matter of when he actually gets traded.
But for as ugly as the situation is the Sabres are still not going to just give him away. Nor can they. He is still Jack Eichel, he is still one of the best players in the league, and if they are going to move him they have to make sure they get back everything they can for him. General manager Kevyn Adams’ asking price reportedly focuses on four young assets that are the equivalent of a first-round pick. If we are being realistic he is probably not going to get that. They might get something close to that, but the return will definitely be lower than that price. Just because that is how these things work.
Still, any team that wants to trade him for will need two things: 1) a way to clear enough salary cap space to take his $10 million per year salary cap number, and 2) enough young assets to pay Buffalo’s asking price.
Let’s look at the possibilities.

No mention of Calgary, despite being mentioned in Eichel rumours often.

OTT didn't think they'd fall off. Neither did SJ. Trading for an injured player without protection is lunacy.

Jones for Johansen made sense. Hall for Larsson less so.
Who would be a sensible single main piece? Pettersson? Fox?
The only 1 for 1ish I'd consider if I'm BUF is Byfield.

Kakko = Valimaki (different draft positions, but Val has progressed strongly and Kakko has not)
Kravtsov = Zary + protected 1st, if the Flames make the playoffs, otherwise a 2nd (Kravtzov is a KHL star, but has yet to make an impact)
or
Chytl = Mangiapane (I'd almost give the edge to Eat Bread)
Zac Jones = Emilio Petterson
or
Matt Robertson = Oliver Kylington
The equivalent of 3 firsts is pretty accurate. Maybe Calgary would only ask for 40% retention, if you think the Rangers have more value. Either way, you can see that the Sabres passed on it.
