To be fair, one thing that is lost in PaperBagger's arguments that he failed to conjure up through his haphazard flurry of posts, was that although Coleman did in fact play against the highest quality lines in a more of a shut-down role, it is a different beast altogether to play against opposing team's best shutdown players as well. This is something that he will see more of playing in the top 6 - opponents who are better at trying to stop him from scoring, rather than trying to score against him.
With that being said, I don't think that will matter much either. If you have watched him play (or heck, just watch his highlights) he is an absolute beast of a forechecker. He often creates his own offence, and he works very well with teammates in generating offence - either by creative and accurate passing ability, scoring even at distance, or driving to the net hard. He is far from a one-trick pony, and is one of those tireless workers all over the ice.
I really think of guys like Coleman as "Mark Stone light". Coleman isn't that talented of course, but he is a much better skater. He will put up more points here than people think. I am excited to have him on the top line, or the 2nd line, or the third line. Whatever line he is on, he will make that line better both at offence and at defence.
You don't need 3 all-stars on one line to make it an elite line. Guys like Coleman are huge, especially if they are added to a team in addition to an overall philosophical change that the Flames have just completed (or almost completed - come on Eichel!).

0.56 PPG with only 1 point coming from the PP because he wasn't used there sounds better than 3rd line production to me.
That's hella good even strength production. And I'd imagine he gets a spot on the second power play unit here.

No, no it wasn’t. The post it responded to, on the other hand…

This may be the worst post of the year.
Calling someone out out for not understanding math with a complete misunderstanding of it themselves is pretty comical.

Care to elaborate on how Tkachuk is comparable to an Art Ross winner in Kucherov or an almost ppg scorer in Rantanen?
I'm assuming you're going to say they all shoot left handed. We get that. What's your favourite flavour of crayon?

On the Devils, he was putting up 20 goals playing with Zajac as his main ES centre and Gusev/Woods on the other wing.
If history is any indicator, Coleman will do quite well if he's partnered with player like Backlund.
Still far from a guaranteed thing that he can elevate his game even more to justify his new contract while playing with pure skill linemates like Gaudreau and Lindholm though.

Man the cheap unfunny quips your throwing around at the end of your posts are not helping your argument here PB'14 and the argument your trying to lean into for describing Coleman as an overpaid 3rd liner is bizarre. Odd take.

1) For the cheap quips, I don't care. Trying to convince someone to change their mind based on the opinion of equally unqualified people is a fools errand. If someone agrees or disagrees with me, sweet, its of 0 significance to me.
2) I have never called Coleman an overpaid 3rd liner, in fact I've said he's an elite 3rd liner several times. Coleman is a gamer and a great player, he just doesn't solve any issues this team has.

I’m gonna guess Darryl Sutter begs to differ.

You claimed that Calgary’s LH players couldn’t be top line RWers because they were either not talented enough or that they were wrong handed. Tkachuk has talent, so obviously talent but LHS won’t cut it in your book. Like I said, your logic lacks depth.
Or are you saying you have to be Kucherov to play off wing well?

Ahh there was a misunderstanding here. I didn't mean to say the LH players couldn't play their off wing at all. I was meaning to say that Tkachuk playing his off wing, as well as our current RW players, all either lacked the skill (Mangi, Dube, Coleman, Ritchie) to play top line minutes or they would have to play out of their position (Tkachuk).
Tkachuk easily has the skill to be a top line winger, but we've seem how hard it can be for a winger to switch sides (Iginla circa Penguins).

Last year after the formation of Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk our top nine typically looked something like:
Mangiapane - Backlund - Nordstrom
Dube - Monahan - Ritchie
Being able to slot Coleman on the Monahan line keeps that line from being a liability. Being able to slot Coleman on the Backlund line keeps that line as offensively dangerous as various iterations of Backlund's line over the year, while being a strong shutdown unit.
I disagree that it doesn't solve issues.
My only issue with the signing is his age (30 next season) and term (age 35 in the final season)

Last I looked, Tkachuk WAS our current top line RW.

Tampa is loaded on the top 2 lines, so that's expected? We got a guy who has 2 cups and is an excellent 2 way player. Not sure why you want to call him a depth guy? Can you give more examples of those other players your wary of?
