Was Jones still signed for this coming year? He couldn’t sign an extension for 8 years yet, then. No, He can’t sign ANY extension yet.

So if he can't sign his extension until the 28th, how can he be signed and traded for picks in this draft?

He doesn't need to be signed before the draft. If he's traded with a year left on his deal, the Blackhawks can just re-sign him to an 8 year term because they're the previous rights holder now.

This is not possible. The extension can’t be signed until the UFA period begins. And Chicago can’t sign him to an 8 year extension at that point.

Why can't they? They'd be re-signing their own player in the last year of his contract.

Do they not have to wait until the UFA starts (28th) for Chicago to actually sign the extension?

Fir the same reason that the Oilers need Toronto to sign and trade Hyman if they want an 8 year deal.

I think….? It it just after ONE of the most recent trade deadline, and free agency day, or both?

I don't believe extensions can be signed until the beginning of free agency in the offseason prior to the last year of the current deal, no?

Incorrect. Hyman's deal was expiring. Jones's isn't. If Hyman had another year left the Oilers could have done the same thing.

Yes, so I assume this won't be officially done until next week. But they can absolutely re-sign him for 8 years, is the point.

Yes they can.

As I mentioned, extension doesn’t become official/get signed until July 28th, which is the first day of the last year of his current contract.
