Well that's one way to spin it I guess. He picked several players that were "who?" level picks. Just some mind numbingly bad selections. The team could have been much better if he picked NHL talent instead of some guys that hope to be NHL bubble players some day. Even if he turned those players into draft picks through trades they would be better off.

Yup, we agree, the Flames are a hot mess. But Treliving did not have a free crack at taking a player from each team in the league, and managed to screw that up. Both teams have time to make changes and improve their roster. I think Seattle has a much easier go in fixing their roster, but it actually could have been that much easier if Francis hasn't whiffed on a few picks. Unless there are some significant assets coming his way tomorrow, he left some pretty good players that could have been used as assets to further improve the team. What would you say if Treliving selected Pitlick, Twarynski, Blackwell, Cholowski, Bayreuther, True, Quenneville, and Geekie? Good selections?

No, that honor still goes to Edmonton. A team that didn't even have a three top four defensemen lost one AND signed Mike Smith to an extension. The Flames lost their captain, but according to the pundits this team was in dire need of new leadership. I think we will get over the loss of Gio quick enough.

Oh, get real.

A full third of the names called today were ones that none of us had even heard before. We have absolutely no idea about the "speed!", "skill!" and "compete!" for a lot of these players.

For everyone complaining about losing Gio for nothing - Treliving was also the one to sign Gio to that contract. The fact that the final year of the contract was valued by Seattle as a 1st and a 3rd means it was a pretty good contract. Gio was exposed because we also have 3 defenseman that are valued higher than that under contract for 3+ more years! That's not too bad...

So you're upset about not getting more assets, that's understandable. However, the teams that could protect Gio are mostly rebuilding teams. They don't need one year of Giordano, because their rebuilds are not yet over. The contending teams that could've used his services had to protect their own guys.

Look I get not giving Tre a free pass for everything... I have doubts about the direction of the team myself. That said, losing Gio resulted from multiple good managerial decisions. You gained assets for Bennett, whom you would've lost for free instead. You lost one year of a good defensman, who in my mind seemed slightly overpaid last year. What are you so sad about?

Get real? First, roughly a third of the names aren’t going to be on the roster, so we can focus on the known commodities for these purposes
How is Gio’s compete level?

McCann, Tanev, Jarnkrok, Gourde, Appleton, Dunn … if you watch hockey, you should see a trend emerging. Guys who are good teammates and have good compete levels. Geez. Even the mystifying choice of that plug McDermid is for somebody at least unpleasant to play against

Clearly he steered away from the guys with high ceiling but questionable commitment (and there were plenty), and definitely from overpaid contracts

Get real? You’re better than that

Wouldn't surprise me if that turned out to be one of the rumoured side deals. Maybe some other team wants Eberle enough to pay Seattle to draft him, but not enough to pay the Islanders' asking price?

I'm upset that BT didn't move Gio for assets but you've made some very good points here.

Plus, any deal including Gio you essentially have to throw in Kylington or something comparable as well.

And if trading Gio for a pick last year then we lose somebody else in this draft. And trading gio last year means probably eating cap. This was a hard thing to do, unfavourable, but making the tough choice is probably a sign of a good gm not a bad one.

I think we have to remember you don't just pick 30 NHLer's on one way deals, there are only 23 roster spots, picking an NHL player to assign to the AHL is not the right solution. I'm sure Francis has a plan and to evaluate the team based on just the draft is silly. That being said there is a long way to go to start the season and I feel like the repeat of Vegas is not going to happen, Seattle will be a bubble team at best.
I fully believe that none of us know all the intricacies of filling out a roster, we all think it's EA Sports and you just pick whoever you want.
Picking a player to flip for a pick is great but what if you can't get any takers? Then you're stuck with a bad contract that handcuffs an expansion team, if I'm starting a team the last thing I want to do is have boat anchor contracts that cripple your ability to be flexible.
Maybe we give Seattle more than 24 hours to show us their plan?

Outside of the Neal Lucic mess that got started by Treliving to begin with, the biggest name coming back to the Flames in the past 3 years was Gustaffson, followed by Pitlick and Forberg...on a team that 2 years ago was 2nd in the league and expected to do a deep Stanley Cup run.

We have also lost Brodie, Giordano, Hamonic (dont get me started on that deal) in the process with zero return.

 Big Deal Treliving

It has been 3 years, one division banner, one play in series win, 2 1st round exits and a playoff miss.

I was very much in the mindset that the core needed to be shook up after the bubble. In a sense it was because Markstrom and Tanev were UFA pieces signed that are both now part of the core where Brodie and to a lesser extent Hamonic walked.

I think many (myself included) are hoping for a big shift to the core to get a little more excited about the direction of the team. Johnny needs to be resolved and I think a shakeup trade or two should occur
