What if a team buys out a player that another team is retaining on?
Do they only buy out their portion and the other team still retains or does the other team get the cap penalty as well spread over extra years?

Honestly we might have a really good chance of signing him if ever he gets there. We have a really solid group of Swedes and Landy would make for a welcomed addition.
The only problem would be that we would pretty much have no choice to trade Gaudreau or Tkachuk.

Just say no to Landeskog.
Good player, but not elite at anything, and he is definitely post-apex, or whatever term you want to use.

I disagree. He was a ppg player last season (52 pts in 54 games). Also 13 pts in 10 playoff games. He has been incredibly consistent his whole career and didn't show any signs of slowing down.
If we signed him, he would instantly be the best player on the team IMO.

Has there been any word on the NHL doing anything about it? At this point, Tampa has set a precedent that it can be done.

Buyer beware with Landeskog. Good player, but will he produce the same without Mackinnon and/or Rantanen?

Good player like I said, but I am taking age and salary into account. It would have to be a 7-year deal, and I'm sure the AAV would need to be in the 9m range to get him to Calgary. And he's a winger.
All we talk about here is building a team the right way. Not sure how Landeskog helps achieve that.

Who would have ever guessed any of this was possible???
Eichel fanboys can "Just sit the #### down" and learn something from the old guys who yell at you to stay the #### off their lawn.

For sure he will get the typical long term UFA deal with the poison pill on the tail end, so I see your point.
I'm all in favour of rebuilding through the draft and avoiding those contracts, but if they are going to do that and sign some UFA, I think Landeskog would be a good edition and seems like a Sutter kind of player. But yeah, generally speaking, I would prefer not to go that route, but it seems to be the Treliving way.
I think it's a moot point anyway. I suspect Colorado already has a deal in principle and is waiting until after the expansion draft to re-sign him, similar to Washington and Ovechkin.

Yup, and Sutter would be the leader.
I think it was Lucic or Giordano that mentioned that after Sutter took over, that they had to take on less of the leadership burden.
If Eichel came here he wouldn’t have to worry about leadership, he just needs to do what he’s told and play.

|
To win a cup you do. MAF's $7M comes off at the end of this year (and $5M R Smith), and another $7M for Patches the year after (front loaded cash, wouldn't be too hard to trade to ARI, etc.)
Instead of $12M on MAF and Smith, you get Eichel and a $2M backup.

I’m shocked that anyone would be against signing Landeskog-big, power forward with heart and guts, plays an uncompromising physical game, and is a true leader, who never takes a shift off. Comes up big in big in the playoffs. He’s exactly what this team needs.

I’m all for Landeskog, especially if we lost Tkachuk from having no intention of re-signing (if true, you never know).
Plus, if Giordano was to get taken by Seattle, I don’t see anyone better than Landeskog as captain material on this team.

After Hall he’s the guy I would want the Flames to land most from UFA. Dude is a beast and unfortunately got lost in all the success of MacKinnon and Rantanen. He would be a big addition from a physicality standpoint and has a game that’s built for a Darryl Sutter team.

It’s funny cause all I heard was how invisible he was in the Vegas series, outside of the game 1 blowout, from Colorado media and fans.
Yes that line was dominant against STL but faded as the Vegas series got tougher.
I’m not saying I wouldn’t want him but given his age and likely cap hit I would rather keep Gaudreau and Tkachuk and focus my energy on something other than a LS winger.

He plays a tough game, I just see him slowing down ala Backes. 3 years sure, anything longer nope.

Then he will definitely go elsewhere. 3 years would be a joke for what he can get on the market.

The San Jose Sharks are ramping up trade discussions with other teams, and winger Kevin Labanc is the most prominent name among the potentially available players, reports The Athletic's Kevin Kurz.
Forward Dylan Gambrell and defenseman Radim Simek have also reportedly been dangled as potential trade bait.
The Sharks would prefer to make deals that involve established NHL players on both sides but are open to gaining more picks for the upcoming draft, Kurz adds.
Labanc recorded 12 goals and 16 assists in 55 games this past season. The 25-year-old produced a career-best 56 points during the 2018-19 campaign. He has three more years left on his contract with an annual cap hit of $4.725 million.
|
Labanc is natural RW coming off back-to-back so-so seasons who might be at his lowest trade value. Former junior teammate of Mangiapane and Andersson.
Cap hit is a little high for my liking, but might be a decent RW option for the Flames.

I think the main difference between Backes and Landeskog, and the reason I think Landeskog will keep going strong, is the fact that Landeskog can actually skate. Backes was a bad skater, even in his best years-he lost a step or two, then couldn’t keep up with NHL pace.
