I don't think that makes sense.
They have I think 9 UFA's and 1 RFA rolling into the offseason with a signed lineup of 14 players and about 12 million to sign minimum. This was their fast window with this core, and its failed out now multiple times. On of the big core is probably going to have to go.
And 1 year is a fluke, 2 years is a pattern, worst yet they have consistantly played their worst hockey in their elimination games.

The Penguins, Capitals, Blues etc etc all had to go through these types of struggles. Constant first round upsets. Crazy collapses.
The best thing these GMs did was not overreact.

Maybe he should have gotten better players. Maybe instead of Foligno he trades with Calgary for Bennett, who has a playoff rep. Or Jeff Carter. Or Palmieri, Zajac, Staal...
None of the other players he got even sniffed the playoffs anyway. They played something like 4 games in the regular season max, and it wasn’t like position was really an issue for the Leafs.

The amount of hate by the Toronto youtube fans is amazing, I've seen a bunch of video's of jersey burnings. Rants and over the top hysterics. It makes me admire the Flames fan base for its disconnect.
I expect that player's twitter and instagram accounts are being hammered by angry fans.

Bennett would have had a much greater impact than Foligno.
What a terrible trade.

I don't see how you consider anything short of folding the franchise as an overreaction to this disaster.
Toronto was 18 points clear of MTL in a short season, and were statistically a 4-1 favourite to win this series. Yes, you can call Game 1 a fluke, with the Tavares injury and a couple of bounces, but then the Leafs storm back and dominate the next 3 games. And then they just totally #### the bed with 3 golden opportunities to eliminate the Habs. These weren't 3 games where the Leafs played well and got goalied, or hit 9 posts and dominated play. They simply didn't show up until it was too late.
We talk about the issues in the room, and with the mental fortitude of the Flames, but their issues pale in comparison to the Leafs. Marner and Matthews have been invisible in multiple playoff years. The saving grace might be they are both still under 25, so perhaps they can mature. I'd buy that more with Matthews than Marner. Marner is likely the softest skill player in the league.
In any case, it's the happiest day of the year, so enjoy!

I will say that despite the Leafs record in the North Division they never looked overly impressive to me. They seemed to play just good enough to win games as the division was so bad that they were never tested by an elite team. It looks to me that they just couldn't get out of cruise control when the games got tight and the Habs upped their intensity to a level that the Leafs weren't ready for.

I didn’t think Matthews and Marner were horrible. They had their chances and got pretty unlucky on a few. OTOH, given the pay and the hype, they have to push through that and score. It was more or less like Monahan/Gaudreau in the last POs - rendered ineffective by a clogged slot and unable to open it up like, say, Mackinnon.
And without Tavares they didn’t have much ability to produce down the line. Galchenyuk went off for a game but that was it.

Can't blame them for seeing this is an all in year ... they have the star power, the support and the weak division, but yikes.

The Leafs have a 1st and two 2nds.
They’ll be able to acquire some good NHL talent for that.
They have three forwards making $33M - they don’t need kids who will be ready to play in 2-4 years.
The Penguins have drafted all of three impact players with their 1st round picks post Crosby, and one of them is Kasperi Kapanen FFS.
Jordan Staal and Olli Maatta are the other two.
Everyone else a) sucks b) was traded for real players.
Matthews, Tavares, Marner, Nylander, Reilly, Brodie, Muzzin.
Spend whatever you need to support that group until the wheels fall off.

In reading through this great bump from a time before the era of trump it’s important to note one of the greater changes of today when there’s references now to our Fsixties, Fseventies, Feighties and Fnineties numbers. Great, great news!

I was hoping the Flames could have snuck in the playoffs because I honestly thought even with how bad they played they could come out of the Canadian division. The Leafs have a good roster with a very high end collection of forwards and a pretty decent blueline. Not having a dependable Freddy Andersen hurt for sure and I think they are in the market for a new goalie.
I can’t see them moving on from their big 4 forwards yet. Nylander always seems like the guy that will eventually go but then he was the best of the group in the playoffs. I am sure they wouldn’t mind entertaining a trade of Tavares but I assume he flexes his NMC immediately. Matthews is their franchise player and I just don’t see them trading Marner.
Would they consider moving Rielly who is still their number 1 Dman?
I am having a hard time seeing how they make major changes unless they are prepared to do something shocking

They gave up 5 picks for 5 UFAs too for basically no return in value, Dubas has managed himself into a tough, tough off-season where he will be under a mega microscope.

Don't worry, I'm sure they will sign every single UFA prospect because they always get free prospects.
Oh and they'll sign all the veteran Ontario born stars who may contribute for them for peanuts (Spezza, Simmonds, Thornton, etc.)
Don't feel sorry for them.

I was hoping for Brodie, but he still has time.
I may be in the minority, but I am just fine having Jumbo Joe not win it.

Marner makes the most sense to move. He's not worth $4M to the Leafs than Nylander, but he'd generate a much better return.
Marner and a young D for Seth Jones + Korpisalo + Domi (the prodigal son returns)?
