Last year 1/3 of the top 15 draftees came from the OHL. This year there’s one OHL prospect in the top 15. That’s not a coincidence, it’s COVID, and I’m willing to bet that if the OHL had played there would be more of their players in the upper end of the draft.

So.. I'll take progression under Darryl going into next season and rolling over the team that had your number earlier.
|
Unfortunately that is...not a Flames' thing. I've never ever seen any Flames' team carry momentum of lessons learned from the previous season into the next one and give credit to the prior season. Nor have I ever heard any Flames' player say they are doing so good in the present season because they learned so many valuable lessons down the useless stretch the season before. Flames just don't do that. Other good teams learn from it. Not the Flames .
But I do agree, it's good to get the monkey off their back about the Sens. Don't need another "curse" set of games.
At this point racking up useless points is a great way to boost trade value for some the changes that are coming. At least that's a good tradeoff for a lesser draft position IMO.

Does he ever ask intelligent questions? Eric is a disturber. His questions are worded to cause problems and I think the Flames are on to him now.

It still haunts my memories. You just mentioning that name has me weeping silently at my desk.

This makes no sense...
You have to actually use real context in this situation rather than grouping an entire season into 1 comment.
When we would lose meaningful games(2 months ago): Rightful criticisms
Winning meaningless games now(when pts do nothing but ruin our draft ranking): Rightful criticisms
That's how this works.
THIS TEAM ALWAYS does this EVERY time.
Then we roll into next year with the same core thinking "maybe they just need __insert rotating asset__ and we could contend"
Items like:
A real coach
Elite goaltender
Scoring RW
The list goes on here, we've seen it and tried it.
Terrible when it matters, great when it doesn't.
How can you even retort this? This team is mediocre in a nutshell EVERY year.

Eric sounded like a pissed off little child on the Fan this morning. Bitching and moaning about how Darryl was being petulant with him at the press conference last night.

The Flames haven't had very many coaching changes mid-season. Just Darryl and Geoff Ward this century. When Darryl took over in 2002-03 mid-season, the team went 19-18-8-1 and missed out on the playoffs. In 2003-04, they went 42-30-7-3 and made it in the next season. Long time ago, but it's the same coach. Sutter is 12-14-0 so far and could end the season with a winning record, which probably doesn't mean a ton in the long run but could indicate that the team is moving in a positive direction.
As for last night, I found the game pretty enjoyable from an offensive standpoint. With all the movement in the offensive zone, including scissor switches and D joining in on the rush and on offense in the zone, it looked like a good sign that they worked on some things and hopefully that they aren't being confined to just getting the puck deep and taking shots from the point. They've done a lot of that boring stuff and Ottawa was tired, but I thought it was a pretty noticeable change yesterday.

In a playoff position vs. not that might account for how people are reacting. Seems obvious no?

Wouldn't those posters be happy when the team loses then and not complain?

I wasn't talking about the whole season, I'm talking since they've been done (and I don't mean mathematically, I literally mean the last couple weeks)

A non-playoff team definitely does not deserve Yanet, but us fans of an almost officially eliminated team definitely do deserve some Yanet!

Still waiting on that scoring RW, or any top 9 RW, for that matter. The team has a serious structural problem, which is a deficit of right-handed shots at forward and D positions. There is not a single natural RW on the team that would even make the lineup of most NHL teams. Treliving tried to fill the void with bargain-bin retreads and got what he paid for. Management insisted on turning the team's only top 9 RW into a C rather than sticking with Bennett, who seems to be demonstrating that his problem with the Flames was indeed their utilization of him.
I don't think the Flames are that far from contention in every position except RW, but the failure to get two top-9 RWs was compounded by transitioning the one they had to another position. Unfortunately, when every single line has a major deficiency, a team is likely to have limited success.
I do think that the Flames can fill the one or possibly both of the 3RW and 4RW roles from prospects in the system. They will need to acquire or draft a 1C or 1RW and a 2RW (admittedly no small feat). But please, no more retread projects, let's give the youth a chance to shine next year.

I didn’t hear this. And I’m generally OK with Francis.
But I have zero interest in him if he decides to start some kind of vendetta campaign against a legendary coach who has been on the job here for less than a third of a full season.
