Gaudreau last night for the 1st half of the game was garbage, pure garbage. Then Monny scored the goal and I think the one upsmanship kicked in.
Then all of a sudden he started back checking a bit harder and zoned in on making decent plays. I watched Johnny specifically last night and I can think of one excellent back check in the 3rd period. It was vintage Johnny. But that felt like a glimpse into the past.
Regardless, if the Flames aren't doing anything tomorrow in regards to trades and we are riding and dying with this group for a 2ns year in a row, we better well see more of what we saw last night.
I'm still of the opinion the only player from the core the Flames should trade is Johnny. I think Monahan is the next Captain 9f this team once Gio rides off into the sunset.
I can’t speak to motivation, but it is a fact that Johnny wasn’t good for the first half of that game and then dialled it way up after the first goal, which happened to be Monahan’s.
I commented in the GT (or maybe earlier in the PGT) about how frustrating it is these days to see Johnny make those kinds of plays both offensively and back checking, because that just proves he can indeed do it if he wants.

The team won 5-0 and got goals (and good games) from both Monahan & Gaudreau. Somehow you still took Sutter's comments as an attack on Gaudreau??
I'm sure Gaudreau's fancy goal really bothered Sutter. And his fancy one touch pass to Lindholm for his goal.
I'm guessing Sutter is ok to be happy with both players playing well and doesn't feel the need to pick a camp each game.
Sutter went out of his way to complement Monahan as doing everything he’s been asked “and more” and how it was nice for him to be rewarded. he said Monahan and “the kids” were a good line. He then says he put 13 and 19 with 28 because 28 is such a good player and he hoped to get the other two going. It wasn’t an attack on Gaudreau (or Tkachuk) but it certainly wasn’t praise. But Sutter is always careful in what he says. He’s never dishonest, but he’s honest in very specific and targeted ways.
TBF, I think Tkachuk and Gaudreau picked it up in the second half of the game. I just think the other three lines were there for the whole game. And Sutter ain’t wrong about saves (and I would add posts) at the beginning of the game. The Oilers had 2 or 3 great chances in the 1st, including a chance off of Tkachuk’s no look drop pass. I’d hate to think what the Flames would have done if those go in.

MT is the other one, obviously Sutter sees the "influence" those two players can have on the outcome of a hockey game. Both have been a little spoiled.
I don't really wish to talk about Connor's comments from last night specifically as it seems disrespectful to Cave. However, there is a pattern here that makes it increasingly clear that he believes that he, and therefore, his team should be managed with some level of preferential treatment.
He's extremely unlikeable particularly compared to the last two generational players: Syd and AO.
IMO this comes straight from the top, where this is the expectation Lowe has that the league and the broadcast networks in Canada, need to see McDavid as a star above all others and to treat him with immunity.
Started with the unbearably akward televised scripted greeting from Katz ,and downhill from there. This is Lowe's golden egg and he knows it and is making sure he pulls whatever strings required to get him the star level coverage to keep McDavid happy so he signs again in Edmonton and doesn't get lost (as part of his pitch to Sportsnet to ramp up McDavids coverage) to a US market.
And I am sure Lowe is actively making sure McDavid knows all he is doing for him and all the chats Lowe has with the league's to show that Lowe is on his side and doing all he can. This, so that McDavid gets the star treatment like Wayne did and that the Oilers get fair treatment by the league.
Lowe has managed to get Rogers to focus a lot of resources of the Oilers. From pulling John Shannon off national broadcasts to the panel for regional Oilers games a few years back, the studio they have built at the arena etc etc. Nevermind the endless droning about McDavid specifically used by any half assed analyst trying to sound like an expert by salivating over any little thing he does. Every move McDavid makes, from going to the bench early or dumping it in, is meant with awe and praise.
For all the numbers Draisital puts up he should be getting equal billing, but not even close.
All the Rogers hype has been told to go towards McDavid, and after 5 years of being coddled and put in a different bubble by your organization and president who is pulling as many media and league strings as he is to keep you happy (so he stays in Edmtonton), eventually it has to rub off him when an unfortunate Covid/timing issue throws a wrench on the plans; it automatically has to be someone's fault, in this case the league, who McDavid has been conditioned by Lowe to think that the league is out to get the Oilers at every turn, so McDavid responds the way he did, as a bitter person.
My guess his grumpiness is less about the Cave memorial and more about the league taking away a planned Saturday day off (and Sunday) the Oilers didn't get because of the Covid rescheduling.

Something that Sutter does extremely well: take the wind out of media windbag's sails. Francis is looking for quotes to write a hit piece on Johnny or mony. Sutter knew that and immediately decided not to give him ####.
Say Sutter isn't a players coach all you want but imo that is some of the best example of positive effect a coach can have on players that is visible to the fans. He can shield them from ####ty media people who like to tear down any built up confidence possible for a story.
Sutter will distract the media as much as he needs to in order to protect his players. We saw that in '04. Great bench boss.

Maybe he wanted to focus on crediting Monahan directly since he's had a lot of criticism.
And/Or he wants to Monahan to find his confidence so he wanted to focus on complimenting him.
Or he has higher expectation of 13 & 19 to be the elite forwards and doesn't want to give them credit anytime they have a good game (since it needs to be that way every game).
Or he's just rambling a bit to not give Francis the soundbites he wants.
This is Sutter we're talking about.
Interpreting what he said as "I like Monahan, I don't like Gaudreau" is people just acting Francis like and trying to fit their own narratives.

Now that the pressure is off this team can suddenly play hockey. Treliving fooled again.
Assuming the Habs and Flames have the same result vs the Leafs on Monday and Tuesday respectively, if the Flames can sweep the two games vs Montreal, they'll be at most 2 points back.
Sure MTL will still have 3 games in hand, but if that scenario played out, the Habs also have then lost 7 of 8 and would have the pressure and press breathing down their neck.
This is really a make or break week that the Flames need to gain 4 points at least on Montreal. They just need to be and stay within striking distance for the 3 games in a row vs MTL in a couple weeks.

Unless he’s out and out lying, which is not his way, he is saying “I like Monahan’s work”. And he’s only saying what a lot of people have noted already - Monahan is really trying to play a 200 foot game. He hasn’t always succeeded and he’s certainly been underproducing, but Sutter cares a lot more about the defensive zone than posters here, who focus mostly on the other end. So he’s obviously going to like Monahan’s effort there.

The Flames have beaten Montreal in three straight games, and have looked really good in their wins. I don't think it is a stretch at all to think that they could run the table on them.

Just for a laugh I read Spector’s take on the game. He feels it was a travesty that the game was scheduled, a ‘black mark on the league’. So much whining.
Oh, and Smith was ‘average’. . If that awful performance was average I wouldn’t want to see bad..
Flames line changes looked good, although the Lindholm line got caved in from a shots and chances perspective at 5v5.
I really like Monahan with Mangiapane and Dube.
IMO the best comparable for Monahan has always been Jeff Carter and that line combination really reminds me of the Toffoli - Carter - Pearson line that had success in LA

Honest question - why is Jeff Carter a good comp for Monahan. I always thought of Carter as possessing high-end speed. Maybe I am off base.
