It's a great play anywhere else on the ice when the players are athletic enough to control the puck with skates, so why not allow it when it results in a goal?
It’s dangerous for a bunch of players to be kicking with knives on their feet. The rule is fine the way it is, though I think Gaudreau was turning his skate to get the angle to deflect it more than actually kicking it .

Geoff Ward (76 Flames games coached)
2020-01-18 - Flames 2, Senators 5
2020-02-23 - Flames 4, Red Wings 2

That is two beatdowns of some last place teams. And we lost one of them actually.

Darryl Sutter (2 Flames games coached)
2021-03-11 - Canadiens 1, Flames 2
2021-03-13 - Canadiens 1, Flames 3

Advanced stats do not wholly determine any team's fate, but that is... pretty damning.

Nah, I think you answered your own question...we don't need players throwing kicks at pucks when goalies and defenders are scrambling in the blue paint.

I can’t believe the difference I’m seeing in the Flames breaking out of their own zone. They’re still putting the puck to the winger on the boards with option A being the center coming up the middle but the difference is that under Ward there was no option B. If the defenceman saw the winger covered it was still being forced there for so many turnovers, and similarly if the winger didn’t have a clean look to get it to the centre it was still being forced there and our opposition was absolutely feasting on us being so stuck in these plays. They’re still using this basic breakout strategy but only when it’s available - I’m seeing a lot more intelligence being used now where if option A is no good, they’re adjusting on the fly with instinct and making the next best play to keep moving the puck. It just felt before like so much static idiocy where now it feels like less thinking and more skill/instinct.

Such a refreshing change compared to the constant hair pulling frustration we were subjected to under Ward.

Was able to successfully get away with the PVR delay watch tonight and just finished. Very nice effort and this team is just beginning their evolution to being a Darryl Sutter team.

I am so happy Darryl is back

I hope this keeps up.

With a real NHL coach this team might not be needing the massive tear down many of us thought they would.

Too bad it took so ####ing long to get a real NHL coach though.

Fingers crossed that this is for real.

I’m still not convinced this is the group that can make it in a tough PO run. But I’m way more hopeful than before.

I don’t know if Sutter is the only coach in the world that could do it, but he’s one of a few. Better than the names people were begging for, especially Gallant. Boudreau - not sold but at least a big name, which I think, with this group, seems important.

Nice writeup.

If I may though, the yellow and lime-green text are very difficult to read against the white background.

I have to ask, can Mangiapane ever be as good as Marchand? Maybe it's just me, but aside form the face licking type antics, their playing styles are very similar. He's a tenacious little bugger, strong on his skates, and has a lot of skill.

When Marchand was 24, I don't think anybody thought he would go on to put up the numbers he has either.

I think Marchand is a bit faster but maybe. The one thing Mangiapane can do to improve is to stay on his feet more (which he did on Backlund’s goal).

Yeah it makes my eyes water. Please change the yellow to orange and the lime green to forest-green and we're good!

Man, it's so nice to see such a hard working, no BS, "you aren't running US over" team. I couldn't stomach watching Flames hockey for the last couple years. They were such a soft and embarrassing bunch.

Those uniforms are sooooooo beautiful too. It was such a waste having a team wearing such beautiful uniforms make me want to vomit all over myself just watching them.

Hopefully this is just the beginning of good things to come.

We had too many passengers in the past sometimes it was the first line, second line, or third line. Seems Sutter won't tolerate any passengers. Another good thing now is if we do have players jump off the ship they won't be here, they will get replaced, moved or benched.

Some of the interview of former players said, if you play hard, and the way Sutter wants you to, you won't have a problem. If we are going to go all the way everyone has to buy in.

2-0 with the Flames playing with both strong effort and strong structure. This has been missing for quite a while.

And it isn't boring!

As for who was right and who was wrong about coaching vs core - let tonight be the last we argue about it. Let's just enjoy the wins as the pile up.

I wonder how the come out against Edmonton. I mean, I am 100% sure that they will come out hard against Edmonton, but I wonder how the game evolves.

I thought that the first game against Montreal, the Flames were able to play with a bit more structure. I thought Montreal wasn't able to impose much on the Flames or on the game. Tonight Montreal had a LOT more push back - a couple of lucky breaks on the Flames' end as well, but Montreal were clearly dominated tonight.

Know what was the nicest surprise for me on the night? When the red light came on during that flurry from Montreal in front of the net. I was 100% confident that this team wasn't going to allow another goal against, and found myself actually surprised that Montreal got another one. It of course got called back and all on the obvious kick, which of course made me happy. It was just a nice feeling to know that the lead was safe, and I haven't felt that way for a while (even though I know that under Peters and even under Ward, the Flames had a very good record when ahead, but it never 'felt' safe like it did tonight).

Games are fun to watch again. Yay!

I think Sutter will be a great coach for this team, there is no doubt there. I just need more than 2 games to have a renewed faith in the core of this team. I have been fooled by this core many times in the past. On my end I just need about a dozen games to see if Sutter can get this core fully engaged.

Don't want to be negative though. That was a great game, and they just had two huge wins. Go flames go!
It will take more than a few games to convince me as well. Remember, the Flames won 7 in a row when Ward took over as head coach.

@DarrenWHaynes

Oliver Kylington played 16:02 tonight. Calgary’s shot attempts for-against while he was on the ice was 19-8, the +11 differential is second-highest of Kylington’s NHL career. I was skeptical of the fit under Sutter, but liked what I saw tonight. Run him out there again on Monday.
