Gaudreau - Game got physical and his line almost feels like it’s short handed at times. He beats everyone to the puck but as soon as it looks like he may get touched he stops short, extends his stick as far as possible and swings for the fences. When the goalie was pulled with a minute left in the game he would rather allow the Oilers to get the puck and Shoot it at the empty net than risk taking any contact. The other team just has to look at him the wrong way and he coughs it up.
The commentators keep talking about how good defensively he is this year but I just don’t see it. He won’t go into the dirty areas, rather hangs back and let’s his line mates do the work. Same in the offensive zone, no idea why anyone dumps the puck in and expects Johnny to race into the corner and fight for the puck because he won’t.
He is our best player but this is one of the main reason this team cannot win in the playoffs. Not willing to sacrifice in order to win.

Thought the game was fine. They brought a compete level that we have rarely seen this season. I think they deserve to win that game most nights. I’d have to challenge anyone that says this game was just like all the others and “same old” Ward team. It wasn’t. Probably 90% of the big hits this team had dished all year happened last night. The transition is clearly already happening and I’m not worried. The direction is clear and I think it will pay immediate dividends.
It’s pretty obvious they give McDavid way too much respect. The game winning goal and how Rasmus played it basically summarizes how conservative they are playing him. It’s not working.

The line needs to be broken up because of what you said coupled with monahan’s skating and the fact Leivo isn’t good enough. It’s a terrible mix.
Someone needs to ride shotgun for gaudreau as well so players can’t do what drysaddle did to him. Almost think lucic might be a good match.

You have to get on mcdavid right when he touches the puck. When he’s up to speed it’s too late. Half of our defence can’t skate well enough to deal with him at full speed. Maybe none of them in fact.
I agree that was their most physical game. The first period was fun to watch.

He needs a bigger guy on that line... I don't blame him these guys are big physical players.

Tkachuk, Lucic, bennet maybe even Ritchie. None of them would be less effective than Leivo.
Maybe give him Lindholm as a center.
Or find another winger all together thats not on the roster via trade.
Or trade Gaudreau. Right now he’s being wasted.

Yeah I didn’t enjoy seeing Drai continually cheap shot him (even if he got penalized) someone needed to take his head off when that was going on.

Couldn’t help but notice Edmonton was more than happy to line match McDavid against Monahan/Gaudreau all night. I know the goal is to keep McDavid away from the Backlund line but they were absolutely content with this matchup all night. Going out of there way to find it in fact

I cant beleive nobody has dropped him yet, he does this every game.

I feel like Huska can't really give the order to hammer Draisaitl but Sutter won't hesitate to once he is at the helm.

All teams playing against the Flames would do that. Monahan cannot carry the puck and he dumps the puck in and more often than not but the wingers cannot retrieve the puck. When the other team attacks with speed this line will get hammered in for a good minute, taking the momentum away. this so call first line is a joke. Ryan’s line can generate more offence than them. Break up this line, should we make the playoffs this line would completely disappear regardless

I agree you can't let McDavid build up speed. But don't see what Rasmus did wrong on the game winner. You let him try to beat Markstrom from that angle every time. Clever disguised shot. Caught Markstrom deep in his net. You don't see him beat like that from a spot like that often, let alone at such a critical juncture. Not a terrible goal but one I'm sure he feels bad about and you expect him to stop.

Yeah Johnny would probably feel and play a lot bigger if guys would have his back. Other team is less likely to take cheap shots if they have to pay for them in spades.

This is a hope and a prayer but I really hope Sutter can rejuvenate Sam. Even as it stands now I don’t understand Leivo on this line. Even an unmotivated Sam can’t do any worse than Leivo. They keep trying and it keeps failing. The guys brings nothing.
They need someone on that line that’s physical and can retrieve pucks.

Pretty sure I recall Bennett sticking up for Johnny when Bennett was playing a lot more physical and fighting.
