I don't think you can really blame Tre for going out and trying to improve the team. If this team never tried to make any free agent signings, we would still be middle of the pack team and the narrative would be why isn't Tre more active in trying to improve the team, etc.
Personally, I prefer the slow draft and develop route. But that requires some serious patience and it's difficult to do with this fanbase and ownership group.

Really? I don't know you could ask for a better fan base. Neither the fans nor the media are particularly tough on the team. And not many ownership groups are more supportive than this one. Spend to the cap, buyouts etc. I'm not convinced ownership is asking the hockey ops group to shortcut anything.
Just my opinion, but I see a GM who has benefited from the financial and operating flexibility that would be the envy of many others. After nearly seven years, the team is his.

I think he was referring to the meddling issues that have been discussed in the past.
Having to get a hold of Ken King to make the Bishop trade, and before his time the ownership group allegedly refusing to do the logical thing and rebuild and pushed the Iginla thing forward for a few years.
Bringing in Burke seemed to fix that to some degree, but we still heard Treliving had to ask for autonomy in order to extend his contract.
A number of years ago I had a few beers with a former Flames coach and the stories were eye opening.

Maybe there is meddling, or was, but I have heard Burke say there is no more of that in Calgary than anywhere else. I really feel BT has a good situation here.
My Dad and I did have beers with Terry Crisp once. Man that guy could cuss. Now just waiting on Textcritic's stories from spending time with James Neal!

There are benefits to being in Calgary but end of the day this is still a bottom 5 market in the league for desirability. I think Calgary ranks ahead of Edmonton, Winnipeg and maybe a couple of US based markets. The media and fans might not be as tough here as they are in other parts of the country but this is still a fishbowl for NHL players. It is a small market city in freezing cold western Canada with the worst arena in the league.
Flames would have been a nice fit for Tavares and they had the cap to make it work that summer. They don’t even get a meeting. I remember at the STH meeting that summer prior to the draft where they traded Hamilton a fan asked about going after some big name free agents and Treliving said “we can have interest in a player but that player also needs to have interest in coming here”
I am very pumped the Flames convinced Markstrom to sign here. That is the first truly elite free agent we signed since Bouwmeester in my opinion (even Bouw was technically a trade and sign)

^ The stars aligned when it came to Markstrom for sure.
Offered him the most money, the additional year, he barely had to move and likely kept his Vancouver home and two of his best friends play for the Flames. Perfect fit really.

Yeah this is true and likely a factor in signing players. But these are hockey players, so hopefully there's at least some familiarity with growing up in places like Calgary.
Green Bay can attract football players after all..

And honestly it’s not an overpayment at all for a top 5 goalie wanting to be here.
Vancouver gave pretty much that contract to Myers but not Markstrom. Woof.
Even if it’s a slight overpayment it was worth it just to remove him from Vancouver and not let Edmonton get him. I’d make that deal over and over again.

Speaking of Jankowski, after 3 pts in 2 games he has zero points and has only had 7 shots on goal since then.

Remember when Joe Colborne signed with Colorado and scored a hat trick in game 1 for them...and then scored 1 goal and 4 assists in the remaining 61 games he played that season?

I think ownership and management put a lot of stock in the opinion of season ticket holders. While the fanbase is engaged and rabid, there is also a history of losing interest when things go badly.
I remember suggesting that the team properly rebuild by tearing it down and stop resisting a bottoming out. It pissed off a few people on here who are season ticket holders (me, not being one). There were many who said they would cancel their tickets rather than see a rebuild. Maybe it wasn't a huge sample size given the total number of season ticket holders, most of whom probably don't engage on here, but I did get the sense that it is a popular sentiment.
I can see how this attitude would influence ownership/management decisions, and not always for the best when it comes to building a contender.

The owners are scared to death of what a rebuild would mean for the sustainability of the franchise, and it is hard to blame them with the examples on hand.
In more than 25-years a Canadian team has not managed to see a rebuild successfully through to a championship. The best result may have been the 2011 Vancouver Canucks, and it took nearly ten years and two management changes from the time the Sedins were drafted before they started to see tangible results.
Since then, the Winnipeg Jets have floundered in mediocrity, the Oilers remain an awful team after winning FOUR draft lotteries, and the Maple Leafs had to invest over $30 m on their top-three forwards without a single playoff-series win to show for it. The Flames were drawing fewer than 12,000 fans to watch hockey in the dark times, and seeing what Ottawa and Vancouver are suffering right now is enough to make them think twice about scorching earth.

It's so not true. I don't see anything about Jankowski.
