Maurice is certainly a sink or swim coach. Seems well liked, is well spoken, the media really loves his quotes and thoughtful responses, and probably players do as well overall.

But in the 22 seasons he's been a head coach, it's feast or famine. Missed the playoffs or fired before the playoffs in 15 of those years. 4 years out in the first round. But then two conference final losses and one cup final loss.

He got out coached last year by GEOFF WARD.

I don't see Maurice as that big an improvement over Ward.

Maurice isn't even in the same conversation as Darryl.
I'm not sure I'd go that far. The Flames defeated the corpse of the Winnipeg Jets in that series.

Yes. And put Simon back on Gaudreau's line.

It's almost like one coach out of a team doesn't really do much to determine the success or failure of an NHL team.

He's record-wise he's the Jeff Fisher of the NHL. The very definition of long tenured mediocre head coach. Jets should have moved on from him a long time ago as every season is a repeat of failures of the season before. That organization deep down knows it doesn't have the resources to go all in for a Stanley Cup and that's why they are happy to just be good enough to challenge for a playoff spot. Not a lot different than the Flames except the Flames are dishonest with their fans and themselves in that they claim winning a cup is the goal but hire head coaches that the other 30 teams wouldn't even consider to interview for head coach.

Beating the Jets AHL squad isn't much to brag about. I will give Ward some credit as for once he actually managed to get a Flames team to come out of a long break playing decent hockey in that series but we are talking about a guy that would probably have a difficult time putting a small lego set together for his kids. Some of the dumbest player deployment I have seen from any head coach ever. He's a throwback to the days of coaching where it was considered genius for a head coach to have a guy sit on the bench for an entire 60 minute playoff game effectively playing shorthanded all game and put him on the ice in OT where he gets a goal. Like that was some master plan when it was really stupidity that worked out in his favor through sheer luck.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if we had lost that series we’re looking at a Rossi/Perfetti/Askarov prospect.
