The main problem I have with this signing is the loss in opportunity.
This deal basically put the nail in the coffin for a major forward UFA signing.

In terms of Tanev's performance, we can wait and see.
But we don't need to wait in order to see how this has negatively affected what could have been done.
A lack of high-end forward depth was the problem in the playoff. This doesn't solve that.

All the decent UFA forwards available are left-shooting LW

We already have Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Mangiapane at this position

Tanev and I have the same birthday.

Except he’s a year younger.

Good Lord.

We needed to sign a top 4 d-man with all of the guys that left. This contract is in the ball park for what needed to be spent on the position. So either we were planning on running a very green right shot d core or we were never going to get a major forward addition. All that being said we still could get a major forward addition which will lead to some trades to facilitate it.

The flames needed a change to the status quo. With a good/great number one goalie addition and forced changes on the back end we are going to see some change. Perhaps what's done already is enough. Perhaps we will see a change up front through signings and trades.

I am happy so far with what tre has done. We have a new look and have not gone backwards rather forwards if you ask me.

Tanev might not be the Golden child most of you were Hoping for but he fills a massive hole for 4.5 million. He will play 19-20 minutes a night and will play the majority of the short handed minutes. For what I expect that he will bring I don't expect to be taking about his contract much for the first 3 years and by year 4 will be water under the bridge.

Oh, my son.

Welcome to the "Realization Club", wherein members officially recognize the fact that, while WE age, NHL players generally occupy the same age-assigned window...

For the record, I am almost exactly one year younger than the greatest Flame of all time (Jarome). I will never again be able to identify with a player "my age"...

They were negotiating with Brodie up until the last minute do it was clear keeping Brodie was an option.

Naw, Treliving said that before, but the timeline has been disclosed now. Brodie was gone while they were dealing with Markstrom.

Plus, it’s been made pretty clear that Brodie was ready to go to Toronto for quite some time and it would have taken an overpay to get him to stay.

It's not like Brodie was someone else's UFA. They were obviously talking for a long time and he more then likely knew the rough price Brodie wanted.

It was probably 5.5~ and I don't think he would of been worth that. Plus we needed a change on D, maybe some more physicality and defense first could do wonders.

Maybe we lock down a few more of those ridiculously close games...

There's been a ton of talk in the hockey world the past few years about this guy's heroics. This is the type of player you win with. Very happy with this signing.

Well, with the Insiders releasing information at times slightly disconnected from actuality I got the player wrong, but had nailed the process. Treliving and Team obviously worked themselves into a situation of desperation which Tanev's Team identified and smartly leveraged to maximize his compensation to the tune of likely an extra $4 million.

The fact a Hockey Operations Team with not one, not two, but three (!) assistant general managers wasn't able to maneuver more fluidly in the situation is alarming. The Process.

In my fantasy hockey World, Cernak at $4.3 x 5 for a second-round pick, or Pulock at $6.5 x 5 for a first-round pick and a third-round pick, would be offer sheets representing superb value for a coveted right-shot defenceman while concurrently being absolutely toxic for the respective teams, but I think given the Covid/flat cap situation an offer sheet would result in indefinite league-wide black listing. If a GM decides to go rogue, though, oh boy would things get heated.

This is all conjecture. You don’t know any of this. You’re making up rumours and filling in the gaps based on half truths.

If Brodie wanted to play here, he would have signed here.
