This must be the only reason, that Brodie took a discount to go to Toronto.
Brodie at 6m with NMC is better value, so yea, I’d be ok with that it’s 1.5m more.
I’m hoping Tanev can prove me wrong, but at face value this deal stinks in comparison.

That is simply incorrect. Since the 2013/14 season when Tanev first became a PK regular, he slots in around the middle relative to his teammates in PK goals allowed per 60 mins. (min 100 gms & 2:00 SH TOI/G (4vs5). Keep in mind that he has also played the large majority of his PK time against the the opposing 1stPP unit. He a shot blocking machine and plays very sound defensively on the PK.

The Canuck fans are raving about the players the Flames acquired.
Character and leadership are a much valued asset in today’s NHL.

To me the worst thing that has happened is when the NHLPA insisted on the players salaries being disclosed so they could use them to compare.
The TSN panel was discussing whether Toronto should have signed Tavares and Carlo C. said he wished there wasn't always a number attached beside every players name, Button was about to call him on that, as one of the PA head guys when this happened, but got interrupted and they never went back to it. It would make hockey discussions more interesting if everyone would just discuss how the player helps a team, not about how much he is overpaid and WE could have got someone better for less money.

Or to put it another way, being a defensive defenseman doesn't mean you're good at it. It's more a comment what he can't do than what he can.
Tanev is okay. He's a top D-man only in a bad team that got shelled in the playoffs.
To be a really good defensive defenseman, you also need to be super consistent, and Tanev isn't that either.
Plus he's just not very good.
To me this is yet another UFA overpayment for veteran truculence.

They can't all be Victor Hedmans.
And are you saying that Reggie sucked in something, anything? That's savage. Reggie is my all time favorite Flame, he had no faults.

I like it...
From a skill perspective I know it’s a downgrade on Brodie. But man is it ever nice to inject some serious grit into our top 4. I liked Brodie as much as anyone... his skating ability is elite and I’ve always enjoyed watching him.
When Hamonic was out of our lineup I wouldnt call the flames D difficult to play against. Even with Hamonic in I don’t think he was overly imposing. I think that changes with Tanev

Depends how you view mistakes.
Brad didn’t sign any middling, coat-tail riding forwards. That’s a start.
He signed a mid-pairing Defensive D who’s been basically the same player at both ends of the rink for four years. The player put up similar numbers to an outgoing Hamonic, and only cost $600k extra.
Defensemen age differently- forward is a young man’s game. Defense is about patience and savvy and positioning.
There was no place to put Neal or Brouwer. There’s a very obvious need for a Tanev type of player on this blue line.

Well, at least the people that are really upset at this (I am only sort of upset - hate that term!) aren't referring to Tanev as a glorified Kris Russell (though I am wondering how the metrics compare!).
Like I said, I think this is the best defencemen on the UFA market to try and fill Brodie's defensive abilities, and he is mobile and able to move the puck decently. Not ideal, but I am willing to see how it plays out. Maybe it turns into one of Treliving's awful UFA contracts, maybe it doesn't. Time will tell, but I don't think there were many other options available out there.

I really like Tanev and while I think this contract is a year too long and about $500 000 too much that's the cost of doing business on "July 1". I think Markstrom is at least a year too long and a million too much also but getting him for less was unlikely.
One thing I would like to add to this debate is that I expect Hanifin-Andersson to be our top pairing by mid-season, whenever that is. I will be thrilled with two years of a solid Gio-Tanev shutdown pairing while Valimaki and Mackey get the time and reps to grow into a solid second pairing.
After that I don't know, as that is too high a salary for your third pairing but maybe he can be traded by then or maybe the cap does go up again making it less and issue.
We've got Andersson and Hanifin each under $5mil for several years so if they work out we will be paying our top pairing less than most teams for a while.

We had some cap space this offseason...better go spend $10.5M on Markstrom and Tanev in day 1.
Why not try to just get a value deal from a team trying to clear cap? NJ was able to get Murray for a great deal.
A third of the league is at the cap and it appears the Flames didn’t even try to take advantage of the cap space we had.
Ah well. Hopefully he can find his game again and reverse the trend of his last two years.
|
2 bolded items, more revisionist history. They spent $10.5M on two players and got rid of 3 for around the same money.
NJ didn't get Murry, it was Ottawa and everyone would have been screaming if Tre had sent a 3rd round pick and signed Murray to a 4 year contract at $6.5M a year for a guy with 3 documented concussions.

We've been mediocre and nothing has changed IMO we got worst this is a downgrade over Brodie and would rather brought Hamonic back. This guy can't stay healthy to save his life and with the minutes he's gonna be eating up we'll be lucky to see him in the line up for 50 games. I don't understand why they would go after him and not Barrie or even bring back Brodie, this teams problem wasn't the goaltending in the playoffs and the defence was okay. The one piece we needed to add was a top 6 winger and that should've been Hall and it's baffling to see Brad continue to beat around the bush and not address that, I like the Markstrom signing but this was a fail. We're technically two seasons removed from that embarrassing first round exit to the Avs and no changes have been made to address the scoring and taking the load off Johnny and Monny. At this rate we're gonna see Duclair signed and all their gonna do is play him on the third or fourth line and once again ruin a players career. This Tanev contract is gonna bite us in the a** in two years and we're going to end up in cap hell. But hey at least they'll make the playoffs and that's all this ownership cares about, that and cheaping out when it comes to hiring coaches.

This is a good post. I have been wondering if the Flames as a team have actually made any progress. We are already seeing our core getting older. The team is poorly built and we don't really have and elite players to build around.
We just let 2 good defensmen go and got nothing in return in the way of decent futures.
I suspect if within the next 2 years we are still spinning our wheels we will be looking at another rebuild. Will we lose more players for nothing while other teams are making trades!!

I don’t think Tanev replaces Brodie, I think he replaces Hamonic.
They’re not going to ask Tanev to do what they asked Brodie to do.
At least, they shouldn’t.

So Andersson replaces Brodie?
Rasmus and Tanev are definitely our top 4 right side D

our top 4 is pretty slow. Hanifin the best skater but has poor gap control anyways.

lol wat?
Tanev was great in the play in rounds, but in the STL and VG series he was getting hemmed in and hammered.
It got so bad that Green even switched it up at some point putting Myers with Hughes.
Edler and Myers were the heavy minute men for the Canucks in the playoffs.

Losing Brodie and Hamonic for nothing is just bad business. We were in a battle for a playoff spot though so I kind of get it.
As for progress. The team made no progress since Treliving came here. Playoff bubble and a first round fodder.
Today, he re-tooled the team in a substantial way. Make a change to the top line and this team is nothing like last season.
Maybe it will blow up in his face, but it's unfair to say that this team is stagnant.
