If Calgary continues to be mediocre in the next 2 years, he's gone anyways. This deal is the next GMs problem.
Exactly - Tre has to swing for the fences on a goalie- it’s unlikely he’s around at the end of Markstrom’s contract anyway, so roll the dice.

At this point, you know this group can’t win without significantly better goaltending, so shoot your shot with the best one you can convince to come here.

He did that.

Good.

I'm guessing $5.5 for 6 years.

Brouwer and Neal were not the top free agents in their position. They didn't finish 4th for an Major NHL award weeks before signing. No comparison

Or trade Rittich and sign a guy like Airdrie's own, Aaron Dell to a cheaper deal to save some money?

No. Wolf is years away (if ever) and the older goalie prospects are not particularily good. You can trade Rittich... but you're signing a McElhinney type back-up if you do.

So long as you have a goalie, you have a chance.

If you don’t have a goalie, you can have Sid and Geno in their primes and it won’t matter.

See: Sid and Geno’s primes when Fleury was letting in 4 a game against the Flyers.

We needed a goalie. We seem to have purchased a fine one.

Drink up and be merry.
Nah. Markstrom is overrated. And kipper signed way below market value after already showing he could play well for us. Not comparable.

The Flames have signed a lovely human being and a remarkable NHL goalie over the last two seasons. There is no reason to expect him to make some major regression to what he was before, even without the tutelage of goalie coach Ian Clark, who is credited with getting Markstrom to the next level. Should there be concerns? As with all UFA signings, there is some. He's had issues with health for the past two seasons, having back, knee and hip issues. Not uncommon for a goalie, though their timing has been a bit back-breaking for the team as they have come during the stretch run of Jan - March in each of the last two seasons and again in the play-offs this year. Realistically he will bring stability to a position to the net for the Flames and will perform up to his contract for half of it at least. Like all goalies, he will have off games. Like all goalies, he will let in the odd bad goal, but in Markstrom's case it's very VERY rare.

Don't worry - I am sure that after a year of Sigalet's tutelage he'll regress and this will be considered the worst UFA signing of 2020
