I think it's more likely hanifin was in the hall trade because he wasn't in the flames plans long term rather than him not being in their plans now after finding out he was almost traded.

This has some merit. Minneapolis needs a forward, preferably a C from what I've been reading. Russo has mentioned guys like Mony or the Nuge as centers that would be coveted in a trade for a player like Dumba. I'm not sure Hanifin makes sense for Dumba.
I could see Hanifin going somewhere for a top 6 forward. Plus OEL and Kuemper make a lot of sense for Calgary providing some salary stays with AZ.

They are going to lose Dumba to the expansion draft in a year. If they can get a solid middle 6 C for him, with 4 years left of his contract, that is a great return.
They are in no position whatsoever to try and command Monahan as a return for Dumba. None.
Some of these proposals are ridiculous.

That is probably the case. Maybe we can use him to replenish some of the draft picks that we have given up over the past 5 years. I do not think there is a team in the league who has drafted less in the first 3 rounds over the past five years than the Calgary Flames.

Then they move him next off-season before the expansion draft.

The Wild are on the cusp of a rebuild in my opinion I just can’t see them trading a 26 year old for a 31/32 year old.
I think they get someone younger. Don’t get me wrong I would love a Backlund for Dumba trade I just don’t think the Wild do (Backs also would veto)

Given Monahan's well documented struggles I'm surprised to see so many people opposed to using him to acquire a 26-year old RHD, with tremendous offensive skill, that can play physical, and defend reasonably well. There's an incredible premium on guys of his ilk and there's a clear vacuum in the Flames system that he could fill.
As others have said, there's so much more that would go into the big picture, ie. what other pieces are involved, other trades the Flames make, who they acquire in free agency, and the expansion draft, but I think you'd be crazy to reject acquiring Dumba outright.
|
Yeah....IIRC its 9 dmen in the history of the league have scored 30 or more.
Dumba is a helluva a player who had a bad season...it happens.
I just dont think the Flames have the ability to go get him though, nor afford him under the cap. Way bigger issues with this team than good defensemen.

Since Hanifin was reportedly almost dealt to NJ I wonder if there is still something in the hopper with them?
Maybe Hanifin for 18th or 20th plus some other stuff and the plan is to use 19th and something else for a Kuemper/OEL acquisition.

He is worth more now. Before the expansion draft he has almost no value to most teams, and pretty much every good team (i.e. those that would be interested in him)

Thats a terrible suggestion. Ekblad is almost in Erik Johnson territory. That's as bad if not worse than the Hall for Larsson one for one deal.

Also the expansion draft.
They are all in on Spurgeon, Suter and Brodin. And they can only protect 3.
You could argue that they don't protect Suter, but 1) that option may not be available to them, and 2) if they did that, and Seattle selected him, he would be a huge risk to retire, slapping Minny with a MASSIVE cap penalty.

I don't recall what the numbers are, but recapture penalties are limited in the new CBA

I would not bring in a 8.25M cap hit for the next 6 years with this much financial uncertainty.
If anything I would target value signings like Galchenyuk, Erik Haula, DeMelo, and Brendan Dillon.
I would also bring back Forbort.
Bringing in a big ticket like OEL or Hall may mean cap suicide in a couple of years.

From an advanced stats perspective Ekblad has been much better the last two seasons.
He had a rough 17-18 but has been much better. Corsica hockey player ratings had him as a top 40 dman in the league last year, and a clear top pairing guy.
Still don’t love his contract but he’s not a terrible player and is better than Larsson. Would be a better option than OEL or Dumba IMO, he’s the youngest and still has the most upside.

I just don't think it makes a lot of sense for Florida to move Ekblad. If they move someone, it'll probably be someone we hardly talk about.

If NJ really wants him, I wonder if they’d be willing to do Severson and the 7th for Hanifin and the 19th. There should be an outstanding prospect at #7.

I have not heard that and couldn't find anything on it - do you have anything on that?
All I can find is the rule that has been in place for a while: the recapture penalty equals the cap savings. and if Suter were to retire now, that would be a $20M hit for the Wild.
