Hall isn't going to sign there, only for them to trade him. And for the Flames it makes no sense either.
Either trade for his rights, or wait until he is an FA.
|
It's for Hall to get the 8th year on a contract. If he signs with Arizona, and then gets flipped it could be an 8 year contract.
It takes a considerable amount of cooperation between two teams and a player's agent though - which is why we never see them.

Arizona is the only team that can sign Hall to an 8 year deal any other team can do 7. If getting the 8th year brings the cap hit down significantly that could be a big benefit to the Flames and worth more than the typical 3rd-5th round pick
The Flames are rumored to be talking about Kuemper so I can see a scenario where they want to get Hall signed and sealed so they can move forward with their offseason plan.
If they are not convinced they can sign Hall if he hits the open market that could pump the brakes on their potential plans to trade Johnny.

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
If they trade a 1st to Arizona, I would imagine they are confident they could get a 1st back for Johnny. Considering they can't afford him and Hall (if thats the direction they go) or OEL, or both?? I'd have to imagine that could be the plan.

I'm thinking they go with Talbot and Kuemper. Ritter goes the other way. I can't help but think there's something sour going on with Rittich and the Flames. The no playoff starts I think have a major part to play.

Was just looking at Hall's agent...and he (Darren Ferris) and Tree should be really good friends.
He represents:
Sam Bennett
Taylor Hall
Josh Anderson
Max Domi
Morgan Frost
Tobias Rieder
Two current Flames and probably the four most discussed trade targets for the Flames on this forum.

Why would we even want an 8th year?
And then, why the hell would we give up more assets to get it?

I think you're right.
Arizona will be looking for a replacement in a 2 goalie system as well since Raanta can't stay healthy. Would be a good opportunity for BSD as well.

An 8th year is not bringing the cap hit down. At least not enough to justify being stuck with him as a 36 year old

To convince him to sign here, I imagine that would be the reason. Taylor Hall is a very good player.

Would Talbot do that though? Kuemper is the clear primary in that tandem, so he's the one who will get the playoff starts and everything Talbs has said is that he wants to be the guy...now whether or not he finds a spot where he could be that is debatable.

Treliving has yet to sign a single player to even a 7 year deal, never mind an 8 year deal.
My bet if the Flames sign Hall, it's a 6 year deal.

Monahan was 7 years with UFA’s less leverage especially when talking about the top forward on the market

If you're that deep into conversations with Hall, then he already wants to sign here.
If I am Hall and I want to end up in Calgary, there is no way in hell that I am signing with Arizona to do it, because there is always the chance that the trade falls through.

I think so. I think Talbot genuinely likes Calgary. Ward going with Talbot ride or die style through the play in and 1st round probably helps with that too. Its going to come down to term for him I think. A few years of stability for his family. And they like AB by all accounts.

I don't know what a reasonable offer would look like where you don't have to put some of that on the table though.
(Next year's draft isn't looking great based on early reports and with lack of proper development that may make it worse - would be more open to picks next year as long as they are lotto protected)

Imo it's too late now to be worried about picks, it's not going to matter at all.
Might as well spend them all.
In the scheme of things Pelletier is worthless in comparison to whatever success the team would've had in the playoffs as the western champs.
The time to worry about pick expenditure was 3 years ago.
Ship has sailed.
Imo not spending picks at this point when the rest of the organizational posture is win now is a worse crime than spending all the picks up to this point.
80/20 proposition.
Spend the picks necessary to get that last 20%

Kuemper is basically a rental, since he has only 1 year left.
The Flames are not contenders. It makes no sense to pay for rentals.
1st round picks are especially out of the question.
I like Kuemper. I think he makes among the most sense out of the goaltending options.
But even if he re-signed, he's too old to be in the Flames' long term plans.
Rather than trading a first, I would rather offer Jakob Pelletier for Kuemper ++.

Disagree entirely with this post. Going all in right now and tossing picks out the door like a flower girl at a wedding would set this franchise back decades. Decades. I swear to effing God some people including the Flames organization completely forget how many picks they sent off for failure of building around the core.
And in this era, you absolutely have to....have to build your organization through the draft. This is not negotiable.
Operating an NHL franchise in 2020 is nothing like pre cap asset management. Your thinking is so assed backwards it blows my mind.

Totally this.
All these proposals of picks flying out the door for other teams underperforming castoffs, or acquiring older UFAs looking to cash in..... these are all generally pointless. Any GM following those suggestions won’t be a GM for long.
And agreed with the post above that rittich is done here. Getting thrown in cold during game 6 was pretty much a shove out the door here
