Complete pass unless its OEL and a draft pick and 50% retained for a 5th round pick.

OEL is declining and overpaid, and I'm not willing to trade a young developing defenseman who's been more productive then OEL.

Huge pass unless we get a good draft pick and huge salary retention back.

Gross.

OEL as a player isn't gross actually.

But at over 8 mil he doesn't possess much if any positive value.

If the contracts were a wash I'd consider Gio for him. Meaning if the Yotes retained the necessary amount to get him down to 6.75.

I can kind of see this happening actually. Mortgage the future for a slight upgrade now.
Yes, you would do it because you believe OEL is an upgrade on Hanifin for the first 3 years (plus some salary cap savings), knowing that you are going to lose the last 3 or 4 years.

You also have to assume that you can upgrade on Lucic with that $2m. So, say you spend it on Virtanen... you end up with OEL and Virtanen for Hanifin and Lucic.

Debatable, but if you are an OEL fan, that looks pretty good.

With the expansion draft looming, we should be staying away from players with NMC. Why would we want to limit our options going into the expansion draft.

I can kind of see it. But of course you’re not really addressing the main problems with the team and you’re giving up a trade chip in Hanifin and getting back an asset that has little value in the trade market because of his contract.

I agree. And I personally want no part of OEL. Just trying to consider ways that the Flames might justify it.

I think we need to re-adjust the temperature here.

The flames aren't in on OEL because he's ####ty, it's because he plays 24 minutes a night and in all situations. The Flames can't ask that of Giordano going forward.

His contract is 'bad', because he's perhaps 1-2 million overpaid in the current market, and as a scandinavian familiar with the flames management group, he's unlikely to want out of the market.

He checks a whole heck of a lot of boxes for the Flames because he's not some Seabrook tier cap bomb, he can actually play minutes.

The Flames are already paying Lucic and Ryan more than they're playing the same rough minutes.

I think it's a bad idea, but I understand why they are looking in his direction.

I agree with Flash Walken's point above. OEL as a player actually makes sense for the Flames even though I'm not a particularly big fan of his.

His contract is ridiculous though... so unless the idea is that we get Kuemper too to offset his overpriced caphit, then I can't imagine it makes sense unless Arizona retained salary, but that defeats the reason Arizona would do it IMO.

OEL doesn't solve any of the Flames' major problems. And he costs $8.25M for the next 7 years.

I agree that he isn't ####ty, I just don't see why we would pursue him

If you can move Gio, then sure, let Treliving use his trading magic to get OEL. Shouldn't cost much considering that the Yotes are trying to shed cap. They seem desperate.

Having Gio AND OEL on the same team would not be ideal at all.

I really, really like OEL, I just don't think he moves the needle much here, why give up assets and take on that money

Oliver Ekman-Larsson showed way more signs of regression at 29 than Giordano did at 35.

Basically no one in the league is comparable to Gio in this sense.
Maybe Chara, Suter, and Yandle?

Because you're desperate to win now and you have no certainty of getting any player in free agency.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson already has ten NHL seasons under his belt.

Is he also the Captain of Team Sweden?

I'm sorry, but OEL does not put Calgary over the top. Unless he magically becomes an elite franchise level center, then he is not currently needed. Not while Giordano still has some gas in the tank.

Like I said, trade Giordano and then we can talk OEL. It would be better in the long term plans to get OEL and trade Giordano, but as of right now I do not want 15m tied to 2 defenseman that aren't even good during the playoffs.

If the Flames go into the season with Gio/Hanifin/Anderson/Kylington/brendan davidson/michael stone they will get killed.

The desperation for the coyotes to move OEL is probably just a bit worse than Calgary's desperation to get a 22+ minute a night defender.

I assume they hope Valimaki will be back.

But it also seems clear that Brodie was never going to re-sign here. Kind of mismanaged that situation.
