Ah, thanks for clarifying.

Not sure why, but he and Hamonic just weren't good together. I was amazed at how long it took the coaches to separate them.

No embellishment.
There was an Athletic article highlighting his zone exit/entry stats as near the best in the league.
Edit: jg13 has it linked above

With all the money spent on defence - what are we doing up front of in net?

Brodie will cost somewhere between 4.5-6M
Gustafsson will cost somewhere between 3.5-5M

That doesn’t leave us money to do anything up front or in net. Say Brodie is 5M and Gus is 4M, that leaves us $7.9M to sign Mang, a goalie, 3 more forwards and a 7th defenceman. Mang alone, if we want to sign him for more than one season will cost 4-5M on a longer term deal (a little less than Lindholm’s deal is what I’d project - 6 years, 4.5M).

I just don’t understand why people want more money spent on the defence. We always spend money on defensive depth and it gets us nowhere - why keep doing the same thing?

The scary thought is that if Hamonic didn't opt out of play I believe that would still be the middle pair right now.

That is a crazy contract for Gustafsson. I would bet he is 1.5 - 2

This season he put up 29 points. The year before he put up 60 points.

He is not signing for 1.5-2M.

Fair enough, but does your eye test tell you that Anderson isn't a good puck mover?
Cause he looks pretty good to me, and there is no doubt Hanafin is benefitting playing with him.

He is a good puck mover. Nowhere near “ one of the best in the NHL” and certainly not “ top ten”. Like I said, I like him a lot.

Could be a great pairing for a lot of years. FYI, Hanifin is 4 months younger than Andersson.

I agree, Travis Hamonic looks to be done as a Flame.

TJ Brodie is good but doesn't appear to be in the Flames plans as he was almost traded to Toronto.

Oliver Kylington could be a game breaker but again, Calgary almost traded him to Vancouver.

And then Noah Hanifin who was supposedly almost dealt to this past season too.

Then we have both Sam Bennett and Mark Jankowski who were said to have wanted out, because of their ice-time and getting scratched this past season...

I suppose things can change but I'd be perfectly fine with moving forward with UFA's
Erik Gustafsson, Derek Forbort, Tobias Rieder instead of ^ those guys.

I fear an ill-timed Sam Bennett penalty could be the difference in this series and that the Flames are a better team the more minutes Derek Ryan plays.

I think the Calgary D next season looks something like this... with Hanifin being potential trade bait for a top 6 C or RW'er.

Giordano - Andersson
Hanifin - Gustafsson
Mackey - Välimäki
Forbort

It was posted previously that Evolving Hockey has his predicted contract at $6 million for 5 years.

A good chance they would have also been out in 3. He was simply horribad last playoffs. So glad he opted out.

Fair enough. I was certainly surprised when I read that article, so my eye test is probably similar to yours. It will be interesting to see how both him and Hanifin continue to develop. I am aware of how young Hanifin is and that is why I am excited for his upside.
I certainly agree with the sentiment that with these 2 and Valimaki there is no need to be spending big FA dollars and term on the likes of Forbort and Gustafsson. Not bad players, but not what the Flames need. Sign Brodie and roll with what we have.

I know you don't like fancy stats, but the data gathered for zone exits and entrances (the skills Andersson ranked top 10 in the league in) is gathered by someone who has to actually watch the games and count successful zone entrances and exits.

It's literally watching with your eyes and counting successful plays.

I'm probably barking up the wrong tree here. You already love Andersson a lot, but I thought I would illuminate exactly what he is considered a top defenseman in the league for, which is skating in transition with the puck.

What was the rumoured return from Vancouver for Kylington?

Edler is terrific, I can see why Calgary wanted that.

Did I just time warp to 2011? What year is it?

He just turned 34 but he's still a very effective dman, probably the Canucks' second-best guy at this point behind Hughes.
