What I figure happened is Vancouver's slumlord ownership told Benning if this slide they're on continues and they miss the playoffs, he's done. He' fine to throw Madden into a deal because maybe they've heard he won't be signing with them anyway--he doesn't have to and can choose to be a free agent.
Even without that the picks are still an overpay because they don't have the cap room to sign Toffoli next year. I think he saw that Ferland's done (sadly--still have positive memories of him living rent free in Bieksa's head) and Boeser may be done for the rest of the regular season.
If we want Toffoli we can go after him after the season, but I'd rather take Markstrom off them--gives us what we need, and ensures they return to the mediocrity that is their norm.

Which is why they held out and didn't leap to pay him. Not every team is Toronto.

Goalies are voodoo, but I firmly believe Demko will end up being the better goalie between the two of them in a year or two.

Year after when hughes is up, Erickson, roussell, and beagle are done, that's 12m
So by season starting 2022, when those two big deals are added, only other current contracts are miller, horvat, myers, and ferland
Ferland based on his setback friday may be done with hockey as well sadly

Petterson and Hughes will be on new contracts in 21-22. Hughes burned his first year after playing late in 18-19 season.

Now, the type of contract he signs here might be a better idea to focus on. Benning has never been great at that part of the job.
Just after getting re-signed and having our pipe line of prospects being lauded as one of the best. For all of Benning's faults he has done a great job on that side of things. Do I like giving up Madden? Of course not. Can I live with it if Toffoli is a Canuck next season? Yes.
|
Benning to Blake: “Can you ask Tyler if he’d be interested in signing with the Canucks long term?”
Blake to Benning: “Yep, he says he absolutely would be and for cheap too “

Seriously, go to capfriendly and try to make a team for next year in an $82.5M cap environment where they re-sign Toffoli (which will cost at least $5.5M for 5 years in the current market). It's possible... if Markstrom walks in UFA.

Odd definition of boned, having to many good players performing well and having to decide with one to let go.
Personally I consider being boned when you have signed players capped yourself out and they aren't performing

I mean, they usually get permission to talk to the player directly in this sort of thing, but yeah. We can pretend your little RP session is how it goes.
Can I be Blake? He's younger and cuter.

I must have read hughes wrong, thought because he was 10.2 he had 1 more
Still dont see much of an issue year after next though
For next year, I believe ferland will have to walk away sadly due to the concussion issues, so toffoli could essentially replace his 3.5 and add another 2m to get to your 5.5, which is very doable, even with keeping markstrom
Disagree on boeser, he was on pace for 66 points over 82, and that's with a 3% drop in his shooting percentage, which came mostly early this season when he was recovering from his injury at the end of last, for a guy who has what's scouted at an elite shot. If he was up at 12% of last year, which isnt that far out there considering over his first 2 seasons he averaged over 14, hes close to 75 over 82, and the injuries dont seem to be the kind that keep reoccurring, so I wouldn't label him injury prone

Toffoli doesn’t have any trade protection. Why would Blake risk a deal falling through? Vancouver isn’t dumb enough to not believe that Toffoli will test UFA?
Surely the Canucks have a shot to keep him if they can make cap room though.

The deal may be dependent on getting that confirmation from the player.

What confirmation is going to be given to Vancouver today? Do they have $6 million plus x multiple years on the table already?

That he'd be interested in re-signing in Vancouver.
Now, whether that means anything is unknown.

I might be in the minority here but I'm glad the Flames aren't targeting these rentals.

Guess the Canucks were desperate to get a replacement as both boeser and Ferland are out. Boeser with a rib cartilage fracture out at least 3 weeks and Ferland likely out for the season.
