If they tank, tank hard. Trade some major pieces in the off season, re-tool and go from there. There are some nice young pieces (especially on the blueline), if the Flames make some decent trades they could be a good team again as early as next season.
Just try not to get to depressed watching it play out, and load up on lots of booze.

The best time to decide who stays and who goes is not in the middle of an epic slump. When it’s over do your evaluation and make your trades when they make sense.

when there were rumors about locker room conflict with the oilers one year, a rumor was all over town and hockey boards about one player getting with another players sister and punches being thrown.
if there really was serious strife between players, wouldn't some rumors be widespread by now?

This team is broken. I'd be shocked if this team looks the same by the new year.

I picked up on that as well. There's no smoke without fire and if this is indeed true, then what does it say about the lack of leadership on the team or the organizations management?
If there's a problem in the room, rip it out, roots 'n' all. Just please, anyone, someone, show some balls and get it sorted.

Flames have a very strong PR team, not much gets leaked in Calgary.

I'm not sure if you're kidding or not, but I will just say this; my best friend's girlfriend is best friends with one of the player's girlfriends. My bud's gf isn't a hockey fan, nor does she know about CP, so I've been pervious to some 'inside' information the past couple of seasons when we chat. I respect the player's privacy so won't say who/what it is.
But I'll just say without going into too many details that some rumors that surfaced the past couple seasons about extracurricular activities aren't exactly false.
I'm not sure how that plays into the team's psyche this season. But when I hear about players not being committed enough/hating to lose , it definitely rings true from what I've learned IMO.
Now that my Orange Julius gossip is out of the way, this team SUCKS. Man oh man. Brutal to see a team go from tops in the league last season, transition to this season looking like they belong in the basement. Absolutely brutal.
I know it can often take months for the Flames to get their groove, so I really believe they aren't as bad as being shown. It's one thing if they genuinely have no talent and dont' have enough NHL quality players. But I don't think that's the case. Getting blown out 4/5 games in a row tells me it's a mental thing and the players need to work through it.

I have to agree, there is more to this than is out there at the moment, you don't go from having the season like the Flames did last year to the sorry state we are now without there being some mitigating circumstances. These players didn't just forget how to play a game that they been playing since they could walk. All the skills and routines don't just go out the window. One player can have a slump but a whole team, come on.

I had hoped that we were seeing a lot of players potential last year, but maybe that was peak? But this is absolutely the valley, and I cannot imagine how rough this is. What's home look like for Johnny? Is it ho-hum as a lot think... or is every lamp in his place smashed to bits?
As much as it's yet another ####-eating grin on an Oiler fan, seeing this in my feed definitely pulled at the heartstrings. While from a hockey standpoint I think there's a lot of potential in a new direction - but from a personal standpoint... boy is that tough to see. What on earth could possibly be going through these guys' minds at this point?
For us fans and Johnny & Co, this has to end soon. Hopefully that meeting last night helped these guys see optimism tomorrow as looking at the results it's pretty hard to see how things get better. They haven't been losing, they've been "do you belong in the NHL" losing.

The scary thing is that the salary cap has come to a point that big trades and salary dumps are hard to pull off. The rebuild will be harder to pull off.

You do realize Backlund and Frolik are the only two players on the roster who didn't finish with a minus last game.
But yes, they are the obviously the reason the team isn't scoring. They put a hex on Tkachuk and Lindholm. They put no scoring pills in Lucic and Jankowskis water bottles. They rigged the puck so Johnny and Monahan continually shoot wide. They continually bend Giordanos stick blades so he cannot handle or shoot the puck correctly.

Backlund does continually miss empty nets fed to him by Tkachuk, and Frolik is a consistent healthy scratch because he’s not an NHL level player anymore.

I'm not as emotionally invested in this team as I would have been back in 1986. But I wonder what the internet would have been like if it existed back them when the Flames skidded for 11 games.
the Flames started with a 15-8-3 record and then went on a god awful skid, to the point where Badger Bob was waiving tickets around the dressing room asking who wants to go play in Moncton.
The last game was a 9-1 pummeling by the Whalers. I think that the only real change they made was to call up Vernon from Moncton.
I'd like to say relax, no big changes are coming, the worlds not ending and all of that stuff. Eventually things will even out.
Maybe we're going to the Stanley Cup finals this year like we did in 86.

Anyone else listen to Overtime on The Fan last night?
I didn’t see the game, but I heard Overtime. Steinberg pulled no punches, and was pretty dead-on accurate with his assessments, which included:
-frustrated that Peters refuses to keep Lindholm at centre (I think this would go a long way to solving some of the top 9 issues, if they just stuck with it)
-baffled that Peters removed Mangiapane from the second line when he was playing pretty well there
-questioned whether or not the core group (named about 5-6 specific players, including Gio) has the ability/strength to face down and prevail through adversity at all (and Pat said this was something he’d been thinking about for some time already)
It was just interesting because Pat’s usually even-keel, and, while he does give honest assessments, last night his comments seemed to go further than previous ones. It was refreshingly candid and somehow cathartic as well.
(The best part was that it was inspired by another classic Robert phone call...!)

There are lots of rumors (that you can believe or not) that point at locker room issues and a divide between some of the older more experienced players and the younger guys that like to party and maybe aren't as committed as others.
