Are you a dog? No? Then get away from that fire hydrant.
Are you OK with being fired based on implicit assumptions? Maybe we're giving Cherry too much credit here in characterizing his observation as some encoded racist statement. Is it possible he's just an idiot who is terrible ad ad lib? Hell, half the segment he's being reminded what he wanted to talk about.
Are you ok with idiots who can barely do their job without help, keeping that job, despite the wishes of their employer?
Sounds like you love unions! (iggy_oi pls ignore)

my point being, you said "Are you OK with being fired based on implicit assumptions?" to which I countered that he was given a chance after the fact to walk back his comments in light of how it was taken. He chose not to. It would have been very easy to do so. Rather, he said I know what I said and I stand by it.
Cherry now in damage control mode but three days later, it feels pretty insincere to me. Also, as has been pointed out repeatedly by others in this thread, Cherry didn't only say "you people". He can't plausibly suggest that intended to, or wished that he had, used "everybody" rather than "you people". It is the "who come here" and "want our milk and honey" parts of the statement that are unacceptable. He hasn't (and I don't see how he possibly could) explained that part of his statement.

Give it time. Before long "racist" will be defined as "being a meanie".
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will cost you your job.
Are you for real? Instead of acknowledging the flagrant racism in Don Cherry's statement you are going to move the goal posts and attempt to minimize his scapegoating of minorities by equating it to "being mean." Well done.

That is a much more contrite tone than he took yesterday. In his interview with Maurie Sherwood Cherry said he had nothing to apologize for, and that he meant every word of what he had said on Saturday night.

What a sad ending. Love him or hate him. It wasn’t his message essentially. It was how he said it
I agree it's a sad ending, I do think though he meant to single out minorities, he is that typically older guy who would hate to think of themselves as racists but says racists crap constantly, in a way they are not racist just angry at a world that has changed that they don't understand anymore.

I actually like many of Don Cherry's hockey takes, but as someone who isn't white, I was definitely offended/angered by his comments.
I've had people tell me to "go back to your f%#king country", etc, even though I was born and raised here. My mother's family are Japanese Canadian and had their belongings and land stolen by the Canadian government. When my mother was born she DIDN'T HAVE THE RIGHT TO VOTE! That wasn't too long ago.
Racism is alive and well in Canada. So, when I hear the type of negative, "us versus them" and "othering" rhetoric Don Cherry used, damn right it should be stomped out right there and then. This is progress.
It's easy to claim "freedom of speech" when it isn't your family and friends to whom these types of comments are directed at, and harm, both now and in the past.

Oh come on. Now he says he meant everyone? Why would he talk about coming to the country and enjoying our milk and honey if he meant everyone? And "Ron didn't say anything"??? #### off.

Anyone using freedom of speech/expression as an argument is ignorant and does not know what it is. I'd implore them to go into their jobs and tell their bosses to F themselves or a select subset of their customers that they are not Canadian enough and see what happens.

Nevermind the fact that he was seriously bad at his job. Probably the worst sports analysis in all of sports media. The segment had devolved into incoherent ramblings mixed in with a couple shouts outs to Bobby Orr. The guy straight up sucked at his job. He used to be good and now he is not. Let’s just be happy we don’t have to watch a guy too proud to quit embarrass himself on national tv anymore.
