Right?! It's insane Scheer was the leader the CPC came up with. Even a lot of the people I know in my riding who voted NDP (liberal isn't an option here) have similar ideals to me (right leaning) they want jobs and social progression.

It's absolutely asinine that there is no party that is fiscally conservative and socially progressive. I understand there is limits on either end to being both of those things, but I also think that's where most Canadians want to be.

With these results the knives should be brought out for all of Trudeau, Scheer, and Singh.

The blue has the popular vote, but lose because the urban centers have a vast representation. If bc and Alberta where given proper representation that equals close to Quebec’s - based on population! - then the country would get better representation instead of so heavily slanted to the Toronto’s and Montreal’s. Popular vote is hardly ever a good metric to base it on. However in Canada’s case, because of biased representation towards the east, the west constantly feels left out because we are. Even if we get the popular vote, we don’t have the seats available to reflect it in parliament.
Representation isn’t the issue. The difference between the largest and smallest riding (outside of Maritimes and Territories) isn’t that significant. In 2015 there were 81k electors per riding in Quebec and 80k per riding in Alberta. The real issue is concentration. The West has Gerrymandered itself into low vote efficiency. We have drawn a neat box and ensures 70% purity. Compared with the other parties who support is far more wide spread so they win seats with 35%.

Canadian dollar seems happy about the minority. Stability I guess. Oh and yeah, Quebec is just awful. Gawd you guys. You're not that special.

This is the result I was hoping for, forces parties to work together if they really want something. Also keeps Trudeau in check and fires Scheer into the sun. Hopefully electoral reform is taken more serious now. Also, I'm sure Jason Kenney is going to Stoke the separatist flames while eating how much we love Canada from the other side of his mouth.

Must be nice to be a politician in Quebec you can talk about green jobs, building public transport, electrifying everything and never worry about how to pay for it.

Only in a post election thread would you see people claiming 34% of the vote is "winning the majority."

It was said earlier in the thread: Conservative policies appeal to 1/3 of Canadians. 2/3 of Canadians want something else. If conservatives want to win, they need to change their policies.

Nobody thought Trudeau would’ve been this vulnerable, so all the top candidates stayed away. Although if the Conservatives had a decent leadership election process, Bernier would have been leader - and that would’ve been interesting.

If MacKay or Ambrose (Raitt would have been good also) can replace Scheer, the party will be in a better long term position than if Scheer had squeaked out a victory tonight.

Instead we get nights like tonight where you have a section of Canada (the prairies) that will get next to no say over the next election term because the liberals will be pandering to Quebec and Ontario. The difference is the senate in the US is equal and elected and effective. Ours is a joke that is unelected and rubber stamps most everything.
I’m not up on the triple e senate so don’t have a say on it at the time. However yes the states have it right with an elected senate and yes it is very effective. Harper was aiming to do this but if memory serves - surprise surprise that the hand selected lifers in the senate blocked quite a bit of legislation, and that making the senate elected one of them. The States really does have superior system in place. They still get their issues, but at least voters have a say in all 3 areas.

The biggest complaint I would have about Harpers years was not getting conservatives in the senate but leaving empty seats for Justin to then fill making it harder for some of his legislation to be blocked. However I could be wrong about who or how many Harper picked for the senate as I did not pay much attention to it so basing it off of what I recall at the moment

Can CBC stop whining about the Green Party and proportional voting already? If we had proportional voting, Conservatives would have won right now and not 36 seats behind #2 in votes.

Frick using that stupid logic Bernier should have won a few seats with 1.7%. The Green only got a few percent more of votes than a lunatic (not that the Greens aren't loons themselves).

Electoral reform will never happen. The conservatives won 36% of the seats with 34% of the vote and only need around 40% to win government. The liberals win 46%of the seats with 33% of the vote. The Bloc get 10% of the seats with 8% of the vote.

Why would any of those parties advocate for electoral reform?

Stupid question- how does proportional voting work when you only have one representative in your riding? It’s not like if my first choice is already voted in then my second choice gets my vote.
