No way Sather takes a job where he answers to Lowe.

His proclamation in his last year or so with the Oilers that he could win multiple cups if he had the funds and resources of the Rangers, tells you all you need to know about him. He got to the finals once with the Rangers, 15 or so years after joining them. And they got swept.
I always thought he was a much better coach than GM.

Maybe he will finally work in Banff - which is the "usual" requirement for owning a house there.

Two houses, which are connected by an illegal underground tunnel...

Truth be told, Slats was the perfect fit for the 1980s NHL and while most here just don't want to admit it he engineered what remains one of the greatest NHL dynasties ever. As a Flames fan his smirk and ego behind the bench irritated me to no end ... but as time has passed i've come to realize that was simply a fun era to be involved in - intense Battle of Alberta - and one which will not likely return.

He did what he could to help Theo Fleury in his darkest days, and for that he earned my respect.

Sometimes this place is just too much. Let the man retire for pete sakes!

If you're part of the OBC in Edmonton, you answer to no one.

Propaganda Minister Baghdad Bob Stauffer just had Brian Burke on his afternoon ministry approved public announcement show, and he asked Burke if the Oilers should reach out to Sather about their open GM position. Burke in his best Flames Secret Agent performance enthusiastically agreed.

This is so good. Stauffy starts off the interview with an inaccuracy which he should have known. He starts wanting to talk about the Leafs 2013 playoff collapse from Brian's perspective, being part of the Leafs, which was after Burke was let go. This is basic level competency.

Brian handled it with class, which is expected.

There's a funny video somewhere about the 85 Oilers and Kevin Lowe was hilarious in it. He jokes about how he took over the GM role and ruined everything. The look on Sather's face was awesome, haha.

The luckiest coach/gm in the history of the league. To have that much young talent (including probably the greatest player ever) come together in such a short time might never happen again. He is/always has been overrated as a coach and a gm. I love that he was quoted as saying something like he could win the cup every year if he had unlimited money to spend and then went to the Rangers and as their GM never won jack squat. What an arrogant goof.

Why would anyone who has the means to live comfortably in New York, want to move back to Edmonton? Especially someone who has nothing left to accomplish?

Davidson makes the most sense.

Messier makes the least.

Messier needs to be in Edmonton.

Shannon reported Thursday night that Mark Messier, Steve Yzerman and John Davidson are among the possible replacements for Sather.

Messier spent 10 of his 25 NHL seasons playing with the Blueshirts and famously led them to a Stanley Cup championship in 1994. Despite being a recognized ambassador to the game, however, Messier has a dearth of NHL front office experience.

Davidson makes sense.

Typical Shannon, blowing sunshine up everyone’s butt about former Oilers and their accomplishments to make sure Lowe and Katz keeping having him up for lunch, by extolling Messier’s greatness and his “dearth” of front office experience.

He was Slats lackie in NY, the special assistant to the president and GM, from 2009 to 2013. That’s it for dearth. And he left after AV got the coaching gig, that he didn’t get after being interviewed for it.

Yzerman is going to Detroit, so Shannon tossing that name in there is silly. And Messier name is a name drop, but setting up for the narrative that the Rags were considering him, but he chose Edmonton instead.

So yes, when Messier comes back to help in Edmonton, it will be good because he learned all he needed to by fetching coffee for Slats and shaking hands as an Alumni, with the Rags for 4 years.
